So happy for you to be pursuing your interests. Its like a soft focus dream I have of going back to university as a mature student and studying something like English literature, or film studies, or art history, something like that. Just things I am interested in. Also a chance to break the mould of life I'm in, meet new people.

    *sigh*

In any case I have realized there are no easy answers, and being an atheist is an uncomfortable position but that’s the point, we simply don’t know. Making shit up is not a position I want to take. And honestly that’s what I feel religions do, no offence to any theists. Since I think religions are man-made, the question about God and Gods becomes a philosophical one.  And thus how do we know there is a God, how do we know the attributes of this God? Can we find evidence for the existence of this God or the nature of this Universe outside natural explanations?

I regard myself as an Atheist rather than Agnostic these days simply because I think I misunderstood the term previously.

I now understand that Atheism is simply a lack of belief that there is a God. That doesn't, however, mean I believe there isn't one.

In fact I rather hope there is one - and I hope there is a next life that will make up for this world that often sucks big time.

What I am sure about, of course, is that the God of the Qur'an, Bible etc... is a man-made fiction.

    @Hassan:

You know, these days I really, really find the idea of a personal God so absurd that I can't believe most of the world believes in one.  I sometimes think talking about it with a straight face gives the idea more respect than it deserves.  Just think about it!!  What exactly does a personal God entail??  banghead idiot2

However, I suppose you can say if we ridicule it too much, we will be alienating the very people we are trying to convince, and for the sake of intellectual scepticism, we should always keep an open mind.

I think Agnosticism is the last refuge for those who are still a little afraid that being totally honest will bring about God's wrath upon them. Wink

Can't say I've ever really hope for the existence of an afterlife.

It seems to me that being made to live forever would be like a kind of insufferable torment rather than something desirable. Imagine it, billions of years, without end.

How long before you got completely bored of existing and then eventually went utterly mad because you could never escape?

I always imagined us coping with eternity. That we would somehow be different, I'd love it though. There are so many places I want to visit, so many things I want to do :( Just not enough time.

Never, I totally believe I could handle living forever, as long as my body didn't age and make it very difficult lol.  There are so many things I want to do, see, learn, experience.  If humanity never changed then yeah it could get boring, but thankfully we evolve, cultures change, topics of interest expand, and how could that ever be boring?

Right now I have one little brief spurt of time in which to try to choose only what I can fit in with what time I have left, that makes me so mad.

An afterlife would be awesome, I don't want to cease to be, I want who I am to never die.  Sadly I think we just die, that's us gone, but I like the fantasy of it.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Yes, I know what you mean, but I'd hope it was an existence unlike an earthly existence.

Agnosticism view that God's existence is unprovable: the belief that it is impossible to know whether or not God exists.
Agnostic somebody denying God's existence is provable: somebody who believes that it is impossible to know whether or not God exists.

Atheism unbelief in God or deities: disbelief in the existence of God or deities
Atheist unbeliever in God or deities: somebody who does not believe in God or deities

Notice that atheism is not denying or disproving God. It's just disbelieving in any.

I hope there is an afterlife. If I die and nothing happens, that will suck.

I don't think it will really suck, before birth there was nothing then after death there is also nothing, the only thing I think is scary in death is leaving everything behind and how painful it is/not going to be.

    Wow. Thanks IA.

I'm not saying its not impossible. I mean, it's just hard.

First, I don't believe in miracles, breaking natural laws and I don't believe in answered prayers.

Second, what is the probability of a being existing from FROM. I mean eternally, before time, just simply existing. This was hard to accept as a muslim. I had to basically swallow it and say this is Allah's Universe. And then bringing matter from nothing. I guess it's the same argument the theist makes, what are the chances of stuff coming from nothing (we don't know enough about the origins of the universe to answer that yet).

Thirdly, I knew that the moment I could imagine God I would stop believing in God. How can I worship a mental construct? Would be the same as worshiping a statue. Now, an image like a beard would be a deal breaker. Now let's break it down. If God consisted of a singe quark, I would have a hard time believing. How can God consist of matter? How ridiculous.

Which leaves me in a hard place, if God is non-existing then how is he existing? I mean wtf does that even make sense?

So I would have to swallow that somehow a non-material Being existed before time, before material, and has set up the world and can most likely interfere with physical laws and material world without being material. It's mind boggling. But how do I prove this? :S

That's the thing, if you don't believe in scripture, how do you know what you know about God? Or Gods? Are we all not making our own mental constructs of this being?

I think saying We don't know is a perfectly fine answer. I hope that whatever being out here, if there is anything, understands this. If they have a problem with me then produce some hard evidence. Like, I'm gonna chop my arm off, I want it regrown immediately. Or just make Jessica Alba fall in love with me, on her free will. Yes its a paradox, but you are the Creator, a paradox should be no hurdle for you.

    Thanks for sharing man.

The important question is: do you live your life assuming that there is a God? IOW, does that possibility/probability/likelihood of God's existence affect your ideology and way of life?
Do you feel guilty when you drink a beer, have sex, eat bacon, or jack off? do you feel guilty because you're not praying or fasting? do you hate gays, Jews, and non-believers? do you have a sense of self-righteousness and/or superiority?

My answer to all these questions is no. I highly doubt you would answer positively to any of them and that's what matters. With me that's where the existence of God becomes a secondary issue.

Good point. Yeah I agree. No I do not feel guilty for any of this, why should I? Who am I harming? If I hurt other, then I feel guilty. But I should not seek forgiveness from an Authority, but from the people I've hurt. I owe them, and nobody else.

I think Agnosticism is the last refuge for those who are still a little afraid that being totally honest will bring about God's wrath upon them. Wink

Not for me.  Although I can understand why you might think this way, as you incrementally went from muslim, to deist, to agnostic to atheist. I went from muslim to agnostic, and remained their ever since my teenage years.

As I dont accept the new-age definition of atheist then I am comfortable with saying I dont know, although I do not believe in an Abrahmic God because of its contradictions.  So yes, I am comfortable saying its possible flying pink rhubarb could have created us. How could I, if I spend my time asking Muslims how do they really know?

I'm agnostic but not afraid of Allah at all.  In fact Allah can go screw himself, because I know he doesnt exist.  However I cant be sure of another type of thing that is responsible.  Thats the only reason I remain agnostic.
