The really interesting bit about all this fuss is how genuinely butthurt a lot of Muslims are. They really feel that everybody must respect the religion of their choice and they simply cannot handle the fact that a lot of people on this planet simply don't share that viewpoint. And certainly don't think that one must tiptoe around Islam.

Freedom to offend is essential order to have freedom of expression. I am genuinely offended by a lot of stuff in Islam yet I don't make a lot of fuss about it.
Frankly a lot of Muslims act like emotional four year old kids who think that the whole world revolves around them. Grow the fuck up!

This group is awesome. I'm not even on facebook but I love this. I will hopefully add my own art to the campaign some day.

What sort of art? Do you draw your own stuff?

Let's say that 3% of the population of a certain European country is Muslim, and this minority wishes to ensure that the other 97% do not draw Mohammed, and respect the Islamic religious rules that only this small group of people follow.

What happens if another religion is created, another belief system, that speaks of how disgusting Arabic sounds, and how much of a sin it is to use this language. Does this small Muslim contingency, in the name of religious respect, silence itself from speaking in Arabic so as to not offend this other religion? My guess is no. My guess is they'd be screaming; "it's our right!" or something along those lines.

This is the problem with these people, it's the hypocrisy and irony. The freedom they have is used to demand that other people do not use their own freedoms. To me, it's a spit in the face of everything that freedom stands for. Truly, these people take for granted everything that freedom has to offer. You look at the people in Iran protesting and rioting for freedom and democracy, and it makes me think that the only way some of these people will understand the importance of freedom is if they're put in a position where they have none at all.

I think these two links are worth sharing. From Muslims who see Mohammed sacred and Hindus who see cows as sacred … here is some reasoning.

How is it interesting?  Tongue Do tell.

People always take what they have for granted, even I do. In a Muslim country such as Iran, people are screaming for reform. In a country that is reformed and free, people are demanding that certain aspects of society and groups of people submit to the religious rules of Islam. I just see it all incredibly ironic. If this misguided teen who grew up in London screaming for Sharia is somehow teleported to Iran under a dictatorship with those Islamic rules he advocates, there's a good chance he'd be one of the youths in Tehran screaming for reform. The reform movement in Iran relies heavily on the youth, and yet the fundamentalist or conservative community of Islam in London relies on the youth too.

I'm 99% sure you didn't mean it the way it sounds but still not a nice thing to say.
  • Re: May 20th. 2010. Draw Muhammad Day
     Reply #130 - May 19, 2010, 04:20 PM

Um. You've completely misunderstood what I've said.

What I am implying is that people who grow up with no freedoms can understand and appreciate the importance of freedom when they see it, whereas people who grow up in a free country can all too easily take it for granted.

Someone who is in the position where they go from having all their freedoms to no freedoms is going to understand and appreciate what freedom means because they've been in the two situations. The people advocating or saying "go to hell freedom" take for granted everything they've got, and I think these people would never understand this until they lived in a country where they didn't have a voice or didn't have that freedom.

It's really not that hard to understand.

I totally agree with what you've said Unechance and you are hitting a very golden nail on the head with your observation.

Memes exists within a subset of people. I am convinced it is through struggle people learn and earn such rights. French revolution, Martin Luthur King, feminist movement, etc. Right now it is difficult to judge but we see the people of Thailand crying for freedom for proper democracy. Once such lessons are learned the hard way, the meme will be ingrained for generations to come.

In the Muslim world, it is happening the most in Iran, and a little in Pakistan (ironically of all places, can't find the article but it is a recent issue of The Economist somewhere)

I must say, I'm really liking this.  Muslims who threaten to kill people have only brought this upon themselves.  If Muslims didn't react so violently when the odd person defames Islam, then not many people would defame Islam.

The fact that Muslims react so violently is precisely the reason why Draw Muhammad Day will hopefully become an annual event.

I read a post on ummah.com in which a Muslim girl said that she used to get really angry and mad when someone drew Muhammad but now she's calmed down and chooses to ignore them.

That shows something.  It shows that we need MORE cartoons of Muhammad and MORE ridicule of Muhammad (preferably factual ridicule).  Soon Muslims will get bored of protesting and they'll run out of flags to burn and they'll soon realise that they've been wasting their time doing all this nonsense and that they should really just grow up and get on with their lives.

Here's the thing. You are right that what is needed is more straight up, factual, straight-from-the-Islamic-sources-horses-mouth truth about Mohammad. What he actually did. What his conduct was. You know, the usual stuff. That kind of thing will be infinitely more damaging to Islam than these cartoons.

But maybe the cartoons are a breaking of a taboo barrier, and widespread dissemination and factual scrutiny of Mo will follow.

And that has the potential to do more harm to Islam than anything else, in the long term.

Saudi extremist targets Dutch and Danish World Cup teams

    Published on 19 May 2010 - 9:30am

An extremist arrested in Iraq says he was planning to attack the Dutch and Danish football teams and their supporters during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The 30-year-old Saudi, Abdullah Azem Saleh al-Qahtani, says he and his friends discussed the attacks, using guns and car bombs, as a reprisal for insults directed against the prophet Muhammad.

He claims he was recruited by al-Qaeda and moved to Iraq in 2004 in order to fight Americans. He added that it is easier to travel to South Africa than to the Netherlands or Denmark.

A spokesperson for the Dutch foreign ministry says they are aware of the threats and have been following the case closely.

Most of the Dutch football players knew nothing about the threatened attacks. The entire squad is off to Austria today for high altitude tests in the Tyrol.

According to the News on the Danish radio, the Danish team was the primary target on account of the Mohammed cartoons. Denmark´s opening match will be against Holland, so the Dutch team would sort of be collatteral damage.

It has been more than 4 years since the Danish Mohammed cartoons, so some of them have long memories.

She should probably read the Quran as I think the descriptions of Jews, atheists, polytheists, and Christians may offend their dignity a lot more than a drawing.

But just 2 days ago, I see them busy copying Japanese porn movie from the hard disk of my other friend, hypocrites...
