Just saw on TV the film Amazing Grace about the abolition of the British slave trade and about one of the leading abolitionist William Wilberforce. It reminded of this song by John Newton (1725-1807)

The title immediately made me think of bach. He is awesome.
His most sublime religious work IMO is matthaus' passion. This is erbarme dich:

Yes, it is a wonderful song, here in a different version in honour of the abolitionist John Brown, to some a traitor and to others a hero and a martyr :

Good find. The "John Brown's Body" version actually came first. I'm well aware of John Brown. Long been one of my personal heroes.

Always the same with Sony music on Youtube; sometimes you can't watch the videos or they remove them. Any alternative video Lilyesque so I may watch it?

Tum Aik gorakh dhanda ho - Perhaps one of the most complex complaints/ praise of the idea of god I have ever heard. I used to listen to this poem every month as a muslim and now as an ex-muslim I listen to it twice as much. I would state some of the lyrics and the absolute majesty of their images but I cannot bring myself to tear them away from their true setting, this can only be heard as it is to be fully appreciated. It is beautifully sang by the greatest religious voice to ever grace mankind in my humble opinion, the great late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan:
(this version is in 3 parts and has a translation)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mVl8_6WHZA&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKQ2NQ7BR9Q&feature=related
This is a song called Bullah ki jana mein kaun. It is a poem written by a sufi saint called Bullah Shah in the 17th century that is trying to somehow establish exactly what god is and sung here by Rabbi Shergill:
(this also has somewhat of a translation)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTxZy32Fv_0&feature=related
Finally, these are three songs sung by a tempestuous female sufi singer called Abida Parveen. Her love for god oozes out of her every syllable and the music itself is mesmerising in every instance:
