Can't link it on my phone but Fora.tv in their conferences section is having a conversation between Christopher Kitchens and Stephen fry on November 9th. Cost is 5 squiggly L's ( pounds) to watch.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I went there with my mum, it was rather boring I thought, also I don't enjoy things in too crowded places. Wasn't sure what I expected really. There were a lot of muslim people there and just quicking skimming through.

I think it was a good idea though, brings Islam 'down to earth' and amongst other civilisations of interest, it engages people in Islam actively (muslims included) even though it's from a positive biased angle, this would help people to start actively thinking about Islam and it's role in their lives in a greater context, than simply being passive believers. Warming up their minds, you can't expect general people to be able to critically think about their religion/discuss debate etc from the get go, if they don't even fully understand their religion other than the scholars of Islam and those who were raised with more knowledge etc. It's kind of understandable they would see it as more of an attack on them and less of a discussion if they don't even have a full grounding their own stance and the confidence to discuss it.

I think most Islamic knowledge is usually just passed down from parents/family to children, without any real education and when parents can't answer something about religion it's easier to say 'because allah says so' in more cases and enforce rules rather than explaining (easier route).
