I imagine you'd feel the same about a hardcore Christian, or orthodox follower of any religion? Its religiosity and misogyny you want to avoid, not race. So no, its not racist.

Yep, exactly, I don't feel inclined to date/marry/take a lover of any of those groups either.

I will agree with you on that but it's important to make a distinction at this point. I think all the psuedo-gangster types who are Arab, African, South Asian etc. and are bigger and try to be the alpha male tend to be this way around here. I rarely come across a gentle giant and if they aren't bigger then there's this massive ego you'd find in almost all sort of those chavy 'I want to be a gangster' idiots.

i so have to agree with that, its like that in bradford. Can you argue and say you can be racist against your own kind. My experience has always been asian people of a muslim background hating on me whereas other people didn't even though they didn't like me they let me get on with my life. There have been odd asian people who i did get along with but it wasn't in mass numbers. Now to them they think i hate them cause they muslim but really it just that the people who have had problems with me have happened to be muslim.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

In retrospect, the term "race" is wrong since the word is used in a negative connotation, and it is invalid genetic or biological designation. I rather see it as "Genetic differences defined by phenotype" but i suppose its too technical to use it in a social setting yet the term is more of a social than biological.

Aren't they all part of the same impulse, though? Fear of the different and the unknown.

I hink that racism goes beyond the fear of the unknown and or of what might be different. Racism is a hate based on not wanting to come to understand another on the ground of persumed or persceived differences. That no desire of finding commons is what makes it racism. A certain amount of fear of the unknown is normal. Every one tends to understand the world through their own experience. I mean really what else do we have to use as a standard then our own experience. However limited experience in and of itself will not cause racism whereas it might make a person a little more fearful of differences due to limited exposure. There can however be a willingness to embrace new ideas and respect differences.

To not want to tolerant something in you personal life based either on knowledge or the the lack of knowledge is a totally different thing.

I also thought that I have a "anti" position towards certain groups of people. As it turns out, no matter if Arab, Asian, African or American, I'm simply "racist" when it comes to stupidity.

So I'm "racist" when it comes to German neo-Nazis, I hate the Islamic oppression of women and free-thinkers, can't stand Christian creationists and don't have a particularly soft spot for Jewish Orthodoxy.

Stupidity is what triggers a "phobia" in me. Mind you, it's not a deceptive concept, like "Islamophobia". "Phobia" in that sense means "unsupported fear of/antipathy without reason", which is not the case when it comes to stupidity. I hate stupidity, because it's stupid. That's a reason which fully justifies my hate.  Afro

I don't value the opinion of a African math teacher more or less than that of a Japanese one, or a German versus Brazilian one, so once again, it's not THAT kind of "antipathy". I would consider myself a racist though, when it comes to man. My father taught me to hate all men, regardless of race and love all women, regardless of race.  dance

May we discuss this further?  In the Frankfurt Museum of Modern art there was by the door a larger than life sculpture of a black monk with full gown - terrifying.  Darth Vader builds on this.

What is it that causes this real fear reaction?  The burqa does cause similar reactions.

Sorry, this is quite a late reply to your post. Do we get reply notifications here on this forum?

Anyway, is it too late to discuss this? I think the fear from seeing a man dressed up in a really orthodox attire stems mostly from the media and personal encounters with fanatical Muslims. A man with a long beard, robe and a turban in my head automatically and unconsciously equates to violence. I don’t know if this is considered as racism as I’m not racist towards Muslims per say. I think it’s just a stereotype that I’m prone too.

Hmm. I don't think that's racism. I think people in general are prone to be around other people that are more similar to them. People from the same community tend to stick together because of common culture, this generally occurs a lot in immigrants, because once they arrive to a new country that is culturally different they receive a cultural shock, and so they try their best to find people of their nationality to feel at "home", if you know what I mean? I don't see that as racism.

Yes you can get email notifications if you want. You'll have toask a Mod exactly how it works because i don't get them and don't care to keep up with topics that way.

i don't think it's every to late to do anything if you can get some one to discuss with you.

Stereotypeing is may likely be a form of racism. I don't really want to brust your pretty bubble but any time some one judges a person by superficial external factors they have acted with prejudice and that is the stepping stone to racism.

    What do you think?

Human beings we are biologically programmed to stereotype people, whether we like it or not. Stereotyping is a sense-making tool, objects or people that are similar to each other are categorized to help simplify and systems information so that information is easier to identified, recalled, predicted and reacted to. And, yes, stereotypes can lead to racism, but then again it depends on the person and the stereotype.

The stereotype in my case is more of a stereotype stemmed from fear of terrorism. For example, when I saw the person in the subway station with the long beard, turban, abaya and black suitcase, I feared him and rushed out of the subway station, afraid that my life might’ve been in danger. I don’t necessarily see that as racism, as racism is defined as "The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races''.

So, what are you views on this? Is this racism?

You say this without referring to any study are any thing. Okay. For the sake of conversation you can have your opinion. You could likely find some expert to support you. I am sure i could find an expert to refute you.

    Where do you live?

Terror attacks have taken place in many locations in the world by people not dressed as "Arabs". So you may what to review what you are presenting to me as "supposed survival" mechanism in the costume  of racism.

Let me tell you I didn't bother to look at your profile or read any of your other post to see if you're a troll or to find out anything about you. Because if this conversation doesn't get more inteligent quick i wont spend much more time on it.

Just  quickly about me I look white I'm  3/4 Jew then some other stuff and black. I was raised in an Islamic country although I have never been Muslim. I have a Jewish relative that was killed by a homicide bomber in Israel. My childern are mixed race. My Son in Law is 1/2 black. I work in law enforcement.

So you can have what ever opinion you want but tell who you are and why you think your opinion is valid. You are no expert in your own right, so don't tell your account that way.

If I am racist towards Arabs or Middle Easterners then I would be racist towards my own ethnicity (I am Afghan/Persian), which isn’t the case. I’ve suffered a terrorism attack in Afghanistan and therefore I am psychologically predisposed to stereotype individuals that physically resemble the terrorists that have killed two of my cousins and a dear friend of mine in the northern province of Afghanistan (Kunduz), just around two years ago. So yes, in my case, it is a survival mechanism when I'm feeling like the person could be a threat.

And, I didn't refer to any kind of study or research simply because I'm not writing a critical essay here. I was merely replying to someone who had quoted me a few months ago, because I had re-logged into this forum after quite a while. However, if you do wish to see some evidence behind my claim then so be it:

    http://cogsci.uwaterloo.ca/Articles/Pages/CCCC.html

And wikipedia (I don't know if you would consider this a valid source): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotype

    And, I live in Canada.

P.S You can see in my very first post in this thread that I had at first believed that my fear was stemmed from racism, so I'm not afraid to admit that I am a racist (if you think I'm denying it), but I have re-evaluated this fear, and I don't believe it's racism, but rather it's a stereotype/generalization I have created out of what I had experienced in Afghanistan.

Also, I will stop replying to this topic since it serves no point or purpose.

In which case it might be helpful to subdivide the Sin of Racism.

Sin Lite: Fear or dislike of the unfamiliar, sometimes crudely and violently expressed. Seldom persists over time and with familiarity. May be hardened if over-zealously stigmatised.

Sin XL Turbo: A conscious, determined hatred of those who are different. This is mighty hard work, so will only ever be a minority fetish.
