    I gotta say, I was a bit underwhelmed by The Rolling Stones on Saturday night. They are really showing their age. It was a bit of a shambles. I wasn't under the delusion that they were gonna be anything near what they were in their prime, but not quite what I expected. Best way to describe it would be a group of OAPs doing a mediocre Rolling Stones tribute act. And yeah, I feel uncomfortable dissing such a legendary band.

    We ended up leaving early and going to the other stage where Public Enemy were playing. They were fucking amazing.

    Arctic Monkeys were brilliant, probably the highlight of the festival. Shame we had to choose between them or Portishead. That's the worst part about such a diverse and expansive music festival, the inevitable timetable clash of two artists you wanna see. Johnny Marr was good. Smashing Pumpkins. Editors. Loads of bands whose name I can't remember.

    Awesome nightlife there too. DJ's from all genres. We were wandering around looking for somewhere to settle for the night, and there's Fatboy Slim playing to a crowd. I didn't even know he was there.

    It wasn't the best line up this year compared to previous years, but it's still always worth the money. There's just so much going on, even besides the actual music.

    Worlds apart. There was no where near that kind of energy in the performance.

    They tried, bless them. But it just wasn't there.

    Surprised you didn't seek out some dnb (randall was playing on the london underground stage AFAIK). Don't look at me like that, I've offered to buy mates drinks so that they can come to techno nights with me. It never works. :(

    Yeah we did. Andy C was there, amongst others. But he's a bit hit and miss these days imo. You never know if you're gonna get a classic set or some stupid immature jump up set. Unfortunately, it was the latter at Glasto. Our buzz was a bit too mellow for that so we went elsewhere.

    I wouldn't know, last contemporary dnb night I went to was DBridge b2b Loxy at Fabric (live) in November. Horrible club night catering to students on the Fridays but when it's a 4.5 hr marathon you can't resist.

    I don't even know what the upper echelons are propagating these days, save Doc Scott who's still got that minimalistic rolling spirit.

    I'm not quite as keen on the subtle, minimal stuff. Odd thing to say since I'm such a fan of dBridge, but he's just an exceptionally brilliant producer no matter what he puts his hands to and it's often still danceable.

    Well, jungle/hardcore was the first genre of dance I really got into if that's what you mean. But I was always exposed to different stuff by my mum. Late 80s house, rave, that kind of thing. Plus chart stuff. Big old skool anthems are what I look back at most fondly.

    I'see. I've only had people recommending me music over the past two years. Prior to that, it was a journey of introverted self-discovery. For what else could it be, when my parents were dismissive of the esoteric nature of music and my social company in school was severely lacking?

    When I discovered krautrock, noise, drone, ambient and minimal dance music, I finally found asocial, de-sexualised music that I could get hammered to alone or study to in equal measure.

    The white man's dilemma? I do not know, for I am not white...

    Certainly not participatory music. I wish someone would marry the rolling exuberance of Good Looking, Moving Shadow and Basement records jungle circa '95-96 with the ambient and IDM influenced soundscapes that have entered the canon. As much as I love this stuff it is head music, and that is the absolute bottom line. dBridge's strength as a DJ is that he doesn't stick to spliff politics — ha-ha, how could he in this day and age anyway!

    Re: Instra:mental yes, oh god yes. 'tis a pity they disbanded. Their solo projects are mediocre for the most part, and this is coming from a house and techno fan...

    To an extent. I find that contingent to possess a greater affinity with jazz fusion than B12, The Black Dog, AFX and Basic Channel.


    Then again I don't think dnb and IDM operate in the same circles. i can just hear a british techno/idm influence in the autonomic sound. I dunno.
