    On a serious note, this really does make me sad. I've known a lot of women who are tremendously upset by the reminder that their husband can have more than one wife, and it's amazing the sheer number of insubstantial interpretations and excuses that they use to either justify it to themselves or confine multiple marriages to certain conditions. It's a real shame, but at least to me it seems to be on the decline?

    I don't see it on the decline. I see it replaced by mistresses, muta'a, and I cannot remember the Sunni term, nearly no one talks about it. I think if you are going to marry a Muslim man you had better accept that they don't have the same vows you do. They don't have to be faithful, and they know it. Sorry if this is harsh, it was true for me, and many women I knew. Men just don't see cheating as a huge deal when they can have multiple partners, how could they think of their own sexual fidelity as a sacred trust, when it is not expected of them?

    Aha...I don't know why it seems that way to me. I guess among the people I've spoken to, there's a lot who are starting to view men who have multiple wives without a "valid" reason like infertility as kind of sleazy, and more people becoming interested in love marriages. Among my in-laws, two men got second wives, I believe around a decade ago, "just to have fun," or so I've heard, and I am under the impression the new marriages were not well received and that there was a lot of disapproval at the time...

    I see what you mean, but I'm hopeful that it will start to fall out of favor in time either way...

    Yes, the first wife's family is always disapproving of marriages occurring after. I would take that with a grain of salt. Of course there is a lot of variety in the Ummah. Even in the same neighborhood, families are running from conservatives without a shred of music or photos, to Western. So that is good, if the tides are turning with your in-laws towards disapproval of multiple spouses, and definitely nice for you, if you prefer to be the only wife.

    Well, the men were the ones everyone was related to, the brother of his father and someone else, I think, but I can't remember the second guy...I guess I must have been lucky enough to have had a lot of experience with those with progressive views. I reckon that's why it seemed that way.

    misyar? I only ever hear about it in relation to the Gulf countries and I think Egypt. Is it a thing outside of those countries? I've never heard of it here.

    It’s really sad and infuriating; especially since the penalty for adultery is so absurd while men essentially get a free pass to have mistresses (a piece of paper makes the deception legitimate Roll Eyes). I’m not sure if it’s on the rise or declining but I’ve heard of two or three cases of married men secretly marrying women abroad. Western Muslimahs are certainly not fans of it, either.

    Mo didn’t allow Ali to marry another wife while he was with Fatima; even Mo knew polygamy sucked for women and wouldn’t have it for his own daughter but fuck Muslim women in general, right?

    I only hear it when Muslim men are fishing for an excuse to have a temporary wife. Most don't bother, most just have their Western girlfriends and hide it from whoever they think should not know.
    I knew a fair number of older Muslim women who were the first wife. Forgotten/excused in favor of the second wife, and living with their adult children.

    I have probably written this story somewhere else but a young woman I worked with had parents from Bangladesh. Arranged marriage. Then her father died when he was 60 or so and her mother in her mid-50's.

    The mother then went to Bangladesh to fix the inheritage of their investments back home where she feared that the family of her late husband would try to rob her of their investments which were their pension saving (they had an Indian restaurant here in Denmark and invested some of the money they made back home in Dhaka in housing).

    Surprisingly the husband's family didn't show to be a problem but member of her own family tried to coup the investments.

    She sorted it all out. Got the paperwork done. Then she looked up her early teenage crush and married him as his wife number 2 with the blessing of wife number 1.

    And then she went back to Denmark.

    My colleague was flabbergasted as she is very, very Danish in thinking and behaviour and was never pressured by her Muslim parents to be Muslim herself. Like WTF MUM??? mysmilie_977

    So in this particular case it was not about exploitation or male priviledge but something cultural (wedding a widow as an extra wife apparently is looked upon as a way of providing security to the widow or something).
