    Those who complain about one disaster getting media attention and another getting ignored never seem to post threads about the other disaster on message boards or use their energy to raise awareness somehow. They just bitch and moan.

    Hi, that was rude. I was one of the people who complained about other attacks not getting media attention, and I have tried to raise awareness of both attacks on other sites and to my friends. Just because I don't post a thread about it on this specific forum, it doesn't mean that I "bitch" and "moan". I have also just posted a thread about an explosion that just happened in Texas. Please keep your assumptions to yourself.

    No, but you still made a generalization about a specific group of people (people who were complaining that other attacks don't get enough media recognition). To make it worse, you made your hypothesis based on the absence of posts on a specific forum, and then concluded that people like that just bitch and moan. Don't be so quick into calling other people idiots.

    When I said that there is a trend towards "our empathies being biased", I meant it in a general sense not directed towards you or a specific group of people. Anyways, I'm not interested in throwing insults back at you, so let's just stop this Smiley

    It isn't necessarily the cheap and easy critiques of mainstream media that irritate me. It's the fact that they are often coupled with implication or outright accusation of hypocrisy or blindness on the part of those mourning any given atrocity. 

    It's always the fucking same. You get punched in the gut by some terrible event on the news, then you get needled by opportunistic grandstanders and concern trolls saying you don't give enough of a shit about this other thing, or that other thing.

    It's humanly impossible to be equally devoted to each specific recent atrocity. Even those who are rubbing people's noses in other atrocities are overlooking something, somewhere, that deserves attention. Nobody is omniscient.

    It is, however, unavoidable that a human with some basic sense of decency and empathy will be emotionally affected when any individual atrocity is thrust into their consciousness. And what might be perceived by some to be a bias is usually nothing of the sort. It's just people reacting to what they have been recently made aware of.

    I don't see the benefit of piling more stuff on those people to be emotionally affected by, especially when wounds are still raw. It's not a kindness to anyone. It doesn't give that other stuff a fair hearing. It just bludgeons people into de-sensitivity and jaded helplessness. The world sucks sometimes. Terrible things happen all over the world every day. We get it. The people who are gonna care, already care. There is only so much damn you can give in a single day.

     I think he looks broadly semetic, but he doesn't look like any ethnicity that hasn't had a long term immigration pattern to the US like Saudi or Yemeni or Pakistani.     One thing we can learn from this no matter who has done it is that the tools to make bombs are relatively easy to learn and assemble. Technically its within grasp of a common man or woman, and the costs are not that high. Any bugger with a grudge, a hatred, a resentment and a cause can become a bomber now, and all you have to do to bring the President to attention, and the world on tenterhooks is to fill a pressure cooker with some stuff and leave it in a shopping mall, in a cinema, on a street corner, or outside a church, synagogue, mosque or temple. Instantly around the world on social media for maximum impact. This is our reality now. Racists or Jihadis. Its within everyones grasp - terrorism has been democratised for the common people to use as an option without needing a  massive logistics expensive effort.
