Have you ever watched Mulan? That movie helped me so much during those times.

My dad calls me. His name blinks on my phone with a photo of us – me, 1 years-old and in his arms, him, pointing me to the camera. As the phone vibrates, I quickly run through a list of chores I completed that day. Did I forget to do something? Why is he calling me? Dad and I are not the type of people who just talk on the phone – at least, not to each other.

I wish I was half the writer you are ex-hij. I love your prose. The juxtaposition in your first paragraph is the stuff of legend. It's genius lies in it's simplicity.

That if I went out and did what I wanted or believed in, I could still find self-worth. If the happy ending where the family finally appreciates me does not happen, there will be others that appreciate all that you can do. You just need to take the risk and strike out there. Work at it.

I really saw myself in Mulan a lot. Especially the song that plays before she leaves her home. That made me cry several times.

Humble brag? Na, if it flows out of you, it does. Nothing wrong with saying so. I have had bouts of that, myself, but with writing that has less rules, like freestyle poetry, years ago when I was young.

I think it is the Muslim female condition, to be shoved into dark corners and berated and rushed and pushed aside. Never mind being shushed. This is all our experience, every Muslim female one of us, I am sure. It enrages, me, now. I don't know how I ever thought forbearance was a virtue.

It's sad how we all bought into it, isn't it? All the while being told that we were the ones in the wrong because we were going against what god had made our natural female nature. This is programming that I'm still struggling with.

What can I say about your writing in general? It is so easy to read and the structure is good.

The only thing I would say is to break your prose up with dialogue (especially long pieces like this.) I know that you're going for a stream of consciousness type of literary style (subconsciously perhaps) but dialogue is not as convoluted as it sounds. You don't have to get the exact dialogue right, just the message conveyed. This provides a break for the reader, or the illusion of it, and helps with the flow of the content.

This...touched me. Deeply. This reminds me of so many people that I know from the MENA region that go through this type of persecution. It reminds me of my parents lecturing me in their car outside of my shared studio with my husband about how all homosexuals are child molesters.. them not knowing that I was partially one of those people. What I felt was a only a fraction of what they dude went through in that regard and it was hellish as it was.

I am angry at the community and his family too.

During high school there was one guy who was caught doing homosexual acts at a party. Probably while drinking.
In any case, word got out and he was ostracized. I was a friend/acquaintance of his and at that time, I hate to say it, but I put my high school reputation ahead of him and just distanced myself. I didn't join in, but I certainly didn't come to his aid.

I can honestly say, it is probably my biggest moral failure in my life so far. Sure, it was high school, but it's one of those things, I wish I could rectify. As far as I know, he's living an okay life, so it's not as tragic as this case.  I'm pretty sure, if the same thing happened now, I'd be there for anybody.
