This may be a reason why flights were still operating...

By not ground the airlines, Iranian government intended to create a layer of protection against any immediate US aerial  retaliation.

The US government would have delayed launching attacks until all the airlines have been cleared from the Iranian airspace.

that is a good point..  that means they fired Surface-to-air missiles ..  imagining  some American fighter jets attacking Iran.,  how many Anti-aircraft defense missiles did they fire??

    ONLY ONE??

I’ve seen a suggestion that two were fired but as far as I know that isn’t confirmed,

If anyone is interested, one of the reasons no US personnel were harmed in the Iranian missile strikes in Iraq was that the Defence Support Programme Satellites saw the heat from the missile launches, decided they were missile launches and broadcast the warning - flying time was a couple of minutes and most US personnel were safely in hardened shelters by the time the missiles arrived. The same satellites saw the SAM launches....

which seems to suggest that more than one SAM was launched.

why a mistake/blunder that makes a terrible tragedy is UNFORGIVABLE??  It is terrible tragedy and  it is forgivable with some sort of compensation...  BUT BUT DETAILED INQUIRY IS NEEDED...  who fired missile?  who ordered to fire it?  what did they know about that flight and its passengers?

Iran military admits to 'unintentionally' downing Ukrainian plane  says news

    Quote
A Ukrainian aircraft which crashed earlier this week in Iran had flown close to a sensitive military site belonging to the elite Revolutionary Guards and was shot down unintentionally due to human error, the Iranian military said in a statement read on state TV on Saturday.

Rogues still talking nonsense.......... flying close to sensitive area??  Idiots commercial flights always  fly  on the airspace given to them in the country they are flying.,  Don't blame Pilot.....

    Quote
President Hassan Rouhani also confirmed the development and said that Iran "deeply regrets the disastrous mistake".

In a series of tweets posted on Saturday, Rouhani promised that investigation would continue to "identify and prosecute this great tragedy and unforgivable mistake".

"The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply regrets this disastrous mistake," he wrote on Twitter. "My thoughts and prayers go to all the mourning families. I offer my sincerest condolences."

[HassanRouhani @ HassanRouhaniArmed Forces’ internal investigation has concluded that regrettably missiles fired due to human error caused the horrific crash of the Ukrainian plane & death of 176 innocent people.
Investigations continue to identify & prosecute this great tragedy & unforgivable mistake. #PS752 [/quote]

    Absolute horror and absolute stupidity..

    1)   Why that airspace not closed  if it is sensitive area? any fool will tell that airspace should be closed before missile launch.  that is  what happens when buffoons end up buying technology that they don't understand  and put baboons as in-charge  such weapons... Idiots want to have atomic weapons...

    Quote
Protesters in Iran are demanding that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei steps down, after the country's military admitted to accidentally downing a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing all 176 people on board.   On Saturday afternoon, thousands of people gathered in Tehran's main squares as meetings organized on social media to mourn the dead transformed into protests against the military's mistake, The New York Times reported. Chants in videos seen on social media by the newspaper included "Death to liars!", "Death to the dictator!" and "You have no shame."

An angry crowd in front of AmirKabir university in the city appeared to chant "Commander-in-chief (Khamenei) resign, resign" in a video, according to Reuters. The news agency said it could not verify the authenticity of the video footage...

Last night’s #IranProtests had a ‘middle-class’ constituency. They came after the bloody uprising of Iran's working classes in Nov. This sequential, rather than synchronised, character of working & middle-class protests explains Islamic Republic's longevity

... Iranian opposition has demonstrated a pathetic inability to address this disjuncture, which unless closed no effective, hegemonic, mass-movement able to overcome Islamic Republic of #Iran's repressive resources is likely to emerge.

Riot police have been deployed in parts of Tehran the morning after tear gas was used to clear the streets of protesters angry at the government’s having mistakenly shot down a passenger jet killing all 176 people on board.

Images of dozens of demonstrators taking to the streets in the capital and other cities including Esfahan were circulating on social media on Sunday morning and activists were calling for mass mourning rallies, raising the possibility of fresh clashes between protesters and security forces.

Several Iranian media outlets on Sunday joined a chorus of domestic and international criticism for both the shooting down of the airliner on Wednesday morning and the subsequent days of official denials that an Iranian missile was responsible.

Footage from the Iranian capital showed police in riot gear and on motorcycles massed in public squares and lining the entrances to the University of Tehran, one of the sites where hundreds turned out for protests on Saturday night chanting for prosecutions and a referendum on the country’s theocratic system.

A clip purportedly shot on Sunday morning at Allameh Tabataba’i University in Tehran showed a small group of students gathered there chanting slogans against the country’s state-run media outlets. Its authenticity could not be immediately verified.

“They are lying that our enemy is America, our enemy is right here,” said protesters outside a university in Tehran in another clip cited by Reuters.
