In the Hadith, the word for white people is "a7mar", "red", right? Cuz when in the desert, what color do white people turn? Red. Grin

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

In India & the rest of the sub continent too. Fairness creams are all the rage-initially they were only aimed at dusky women wanting to get fairer & men had to use women's creams(in South India, men were bigger users of fairness creams than women) but then cosmetics companies manufactured fairness creams especially for men.

It was the same in Europe & its offshoots till a century back(fairytales like Snow White) & white skin was highly prized in women, when tanning became fashionable.I suppose just like fairness was a status symbol ie it showed that these fair women did not have to work long hours in the sun, now "tanning" became a status symbol coz it meant that these people could afford vacations in exotic beaches around the world!

Of course, every dark person isn't called an "Abd" or a "Nigger" or its equivalents-only a particular  race is called that as a pejorative.

World renowned historian Will Durant"...the Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. It is a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precious good, whose delicate complex order and freedom can at any moment be overthrown..."

Yes it does depend on context. For instance over here Greeks, or people of Greek descent, are called "wogs". This was originally derogatory but has become a term of endearment used among friends. Of course it can still be used in a derogatory fashion by dumb people, but you get that.

Unfortunately, it's not just in the Arab world.

My only personal experience of how it works "over there" with that sort of thing is based on limited interaction with my dad. He would call American Black people "niggers" but he said he didn't think of Black African Muslims (like the Somalis in his building) that way, and he never used that word for them. So I guess he was racist, just less racist when it came to other Muslims.

    fuck you

That is insulting. May be native arabic speaker can explain.

Abd, written in Arabic as  عبد     , means a slave or a servant.

The actual word for a slave, whether white, brown, black or yellow, is Raqeeq  رقيق , but you will not find this word in Qur'aan.

All the slaves and servants were called by their names. For example, Bilal was a slave and people called him by that name.

Regarding a slave or a servant of God, one has to add Allah's name to Abd to make it Abdullah.

So, if I have to show that Jesus was a Slave of Allah, he would be called as Jesus Abdullah.

    BMZ

Hello bmz, picking one of dozen synonyms and jumping for joy because it does not exist in the koran is not valid. The assertion that 'rakik' is the only word that is used for slave is wrong.

Particularly that word is not used in spoken arabic and very rarely in ancient written arabic.

As for the word Abd. It has few uses. It can mean "Abd Allah", or it can mean My abd.

For you BMZ, I am going to pass you this very lovely poem that Arabs passed down the generations to their kids until it made it to my virgin ears and now, you get to enjoy it as well:

"Wa la Tashtaria Al Abda Illa Wal Assa Maahu..
     Inna Al Abda LaSahikun, Ghadaru."

"Do not buy the abd unless a stick comes with him..
Because the Abd has erased honor, is Backstabbing."

It takes about Seven years for the cycle of islam to pass its course. Your time is coming up bmz, hope your friends and family are prepared to accept your new choices in life.

Well, you are an Arab and Arabs have messed up the world. You take care of your kids and I hope you were not recited that poem. I hope you have also not recited it to your kids.  Cheesy

I am not an Arab, so I don't care.

Now, what is all that about the Seven year cycle of Islam? Can you elaborate? What is the wishful thinking of yours and what do you think will happen to me, my friends and family?  finmad

May I ask this: Why most of the ex-Muslims still remain violent, retaining the same mindset and go quickly into Maulana Mode, without any reason? I had only explained a simple point to the lady. What irritated you? Cheesy

    BMZ

Excellent, and next time before talking about subjects you do not understand and words you do now know, ask you arabic master first.

You do not like how the arabs screwed the world, why do you follow them? what good they will give you? 57 islamic country in the world, which one did better once islam moved in? which one became better as people became more religious? cut the crap, let is go already and stop supporting hate. Yes, but a black man was more often referred to as a Zanji ( زنجي )... Sometimes even as a Kafir.

Just a lame joke, the houris in the Koran were sometimes called white raisins.

I don't think 3abd should be a derogatory term in Islam. Muhammad is referred to as an 3abd of Allah:

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِى أَنْزَلَ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ الْكِتَـبَ

"Praise be to God. He has sent the Book to His servant and has made it a flawless guide (for human beings)"

    -Koran al-Kahf verse 1

But as Baal said, it depends upon the context.

"It may happen that the enemies of Islam may consider it expedient not to take any action against Islam, if Islam leaves them alone in their geographical boundaries... But Islam cannot agree to this unless they submit to its authority by paying Jizyah"

Yes, but a black man was more often referred to as a Zanji ( زنجي )... Sometimes even as a Kafir.

Zingi, barbari, abd, bawwab (door porter), Nubi, Habashi all terms used to denote a black man in common arabic.

Also a portion of arabic names are abd <some name of allah>. I even saw Abd Allat and Abd Al Izza few times. But confounding the words Abd of God and just a Abd comes too quickly to arabs.

Here you go eng.BMZ making Red Herrings again: forming an accusation against people, just to avoid discussing the original blumber you committed at your entrance statement.

Ex-muslims did not commit over 12000 terrorist act since 9/11. Ex-muslims did not kill people who complimented the prophet. Ex-muslims did not honor kill their daughtes. Ex-muslims do not sit wondering if their non-muslim friends will burn in hell. Ex-muslims do not have the need to slit the throat and poison the throats of their jewish friends just to guarantee a place in Jannat.

Till next time eng.BMZ and I hope you learn from your mistakes.

In Canada our engineers have an iron ring on their pinky. Once some of our engineers screwed up a design, and a bridge being built fell killing workers. From the iron of this bridge, they now make those rings, commonly referred to as the 'incompetence ring'. Every engineer is meant to wear this ring, as a reminder how much he is responsible for those who depend on him.

When you, eng.BMZ, fail to detect flaws, when you fail to detect and alert about a failing (failed) system, what chance do those who depend on you have, to detect the failures on their own.

I thought by "pinky" you meant "pinky-winky" - I must admit it made me wince

When you, eng.BMZ, fail to detect flaws, when you fail to detect and alert about a failing (failed) system, what chance do those who depend on you have, to detect the failures on their own.

..and stop history from continually repeating itself - as it had already done when it got to you.

It stops here with all of us fortunately, not for you BMZ. Sadly not for you..

It is imperative to answer the questions put to you. Once you have done that, you can ask other questions.

You have not answered my questions, Baal.

    Answer those questions, first!

Baal has a habit of this; dodging questions.

Yes, it hasnt gone unnoticed.  He did that to me when I asked a single question in a single line.  I repeated it, and again not even a reply - he had gone awol.

Not good forum etiquette, rather than sticking your fingers in your ear,  if you dont want to answer a question just say so.  As I said, it doesnt go unnoticed.

Have you not heard? We Ex-Muslims are forming gangs across the world. We  are collecting Ak47s, RPG launchers and molotovs.

We are firebombing Mosques and shooting Burqa'd women in the street. We also march into takeaways and poison the owners.

We even have a text that tells us what to do, it tells us that we should stone Muslims and throw them off cliffs (!)

BMZ-do us all a favour-think before you speak.

"I am ready to make my confession. I ask for no forgiveness father, for I have not sinned. I have only done what I needed to do to survive. I did not ask for the life that I was given, but it was given nonetheless-and with it, I did my best"

There was nothing pressing about the question, nor was I standing by BMZ.  Its just poor etiquette thats all.

ok people, I have been away for a while... sorry about that.

As a native Arabic speaker I can put in my 2 cents and a little lesson in Arabic.

Abd means slave or servant... the names that start with Abd, like Abd-Allah or Abdul-Rahman and such, mean servant of Allah, and it can go with almost all the 99 names.

The color black is Aswad, and can be used to describe the color of hair, eyes (I know they are dark brown, but where I am from they are black), or skin.. a black person is Zinje, which is Negro in English.

Abd has been used as a derogatory term for black people where I am from... but there is a term for every and anyone out there in each culture... and please do not pretend that you don't know them.

    Habashi

There's a type of Asian sweet called Halwa, and you get dark versions of them, very very tasty. But they're referred to around these parts as Habashi Halwa!
