Has anyone mentioned the collapse of the Respect Party?  George Galloway was their single MP in Bethnal Green, and they hoped to get Abjol Miah and Salma Yaqoob elected too... but they ended up with none.

I personally am very glad.  They way in which George Galloway won his seat in 2005, whipping up racial tension, pandering to get the Muslim vote, was despicable.

Yeah, Respect is dead in the water, good riddance to bad rubbish.

How did he whip up racial tension?

I thought they abolished this policy a while ago? Well before the election?

In any case, that was never going to happen in this coalition.

No, it's always been a central policy of theirs. Why do you think they scrapped it?

And, if you ask me, if working a coalition involves scrapping some of your core principles, then its not worth the coalition. I'm starting to see the truth in what Billy said now. I voted Lib Dem, and what have the Lib Dems done? They've strengthened what would have been a minority Conservative government!  finmad

I could have tolerated the Lib Dems compromising on their minor policies, but their central policies? Isn't that selling themselves out? If you don't think so, tell me what exactly would you count as Lib Dems selling themselves out?  Huh? There's only a limited number of times you can play the "yes but Lib Dems didn't win the election" card. I know I played that card myself but I'm starting to feel disillusioned (again!), and to be honest, I don't know why I expected otherwise.

The unlived life is not worth examining.

    George Galloway lost his seat?

Boundary changes led him to stand in a different area where he thought he would win. He failed. Another Respect candidate stood in Bethnal Green and Bow and they did equally miserably there.

He wasn't there to hear his own results either. I remember someone shouting "and where is he?!" lol

And did Labour take Bethnal Green and Bow back?  Between the miserable showing for the BNP and Respect it looks like the UK electorate are sick of extremists on all sides.  For once NI seems to be in tune with the rest of you, hence the ousting of the DUP MP for East Belfast in favour of an Alliance MP.

Yeah Labour took Bethnal Green and Bow, Rushanara Ali, a young British Bangladeshi woman is now MP. Respect have been wiped off the face of the planet.

Ali's created waves back in Bangladesh. She looks promising for promoting integration.

Interesting to note how Sayeeda Warsi, another progressive Muslim, dressed for the cabinet photo shoot.

They are both progressive icons needed for young Muslims girls in this country I think. Good luck to them both!

I suspect Sayeeda Warsi has a prominence as the token minority, but also because the government needs a figure who can give the alternative view if and when another shit storm involving Islamic extremists kicks off in the UK.

I have no idea if that is the case for her selection but indeed she would be able to make remarks a white person cannot.

That will prove interesting, brother vs brother for leadership.  I wonder if thats ever happened before in modern history, not just in this country but any other one too!

He's obviously some sort of abberration which should have been filtered out long before getting to a public forum. Everyone knows that Muslims are a homogenous group who all have the same opinions and follow their "community leaders" without question.  icon_blahblah

It's a shame that his dissent will be used by right-wing propagandists to ease the collective conscience of bigoted little englanders.

Not sure I agree with this. I don't think I'll hear BNP go, "Look even Muslims agree we shouldn't have minarets!", because no one will take them seriously. I think the British public can digest a Muslim saying something against themselves, but they find it much harder to accept it from non-Muslims. Just my observation.

Just my experience, I'm afraid. Perhaps if you'd had countless arguments on issues like race and immigration with my mum whilst growing up and heard the number of times she'd reference "some [ethnic minority character] on [insert shitty chat show here] who said 'it's all their own fault', we're just a soft touch in this country giving them benefits when we should be deporting them...". I could go on but I'd usually phase out around there for not wanting to get raise my voice to her. Luckily my persistence paid off. Somewhat.  Cheesy

Interesting, ok thanks thinkfree. You have good anger management. I too just switch off as soon as one of my rents starts the, "See those Brits and their drinking and the high divorce rates ... some English man told me the other day you immigrants know what marriage really is ..." ... kind of rubbish.

Biased interpretation is a very annoying facet of confirmation bias.  015

Of course, it goes without saying that I fully support the original Question Time audience member voicing his opinion. It's very important for Muslims to see dissent and bold exclamations of differing opinions within their own community as a way to counteract the sheep mentatlity currently being exploited by Islamist influences.

No, it's always been a central policy of theirs. Why do you think they scrapped it?

Because I remember reading an article a few months ago where they announced they will be scrapping that policy temporarily. I think they realised it wouldn't be viable in the current climate, I think.

Their central policies conflict with the Cons. The Cons have the majority, so they have a right to put their policies first and with higher priority to the LibDems. The LibDems made a hard decision. There was little choice though. It was either ConLib, with a majority government, or LibLab with a minority government.

I'd rather we have a stable government right now. The only thing that's really pissed me off is that 55% thing from the Cons.

Peru, I know all that. But making a coalition isn't compulsory. The Lib Dems made a choice to join this coalition. They could have said no.

Look at it this way: there are reasons why some people voted Lib Dem. Now, instead of representing those reasons, the Lib Dems are actually going to abstain from voting or help vote for exactly the opposite of what they proposed. It's even worse considering this was one of their central policies.

It was either a coalition or a minority government, they made a smart but difficult choice. I know many of their voters will be upset, but I don't feel they had much of a choice.
