  • What aspects of Islam/ being Muslim do you miss OR don't miss
     OP - February 03, 2011, 02:06 AM

Assuming a majority of us don't miss Islam , but I miss a lot of us probably miss the cultural aspects I guess. Or perhaps we could do a "things we dont miss about islam".I for one miss .......

    1) The sisterhood : Girls who I had just met were prepared to help me and treated me as one of their own . I know they probably did it for a self interested reason and gain jannah points but in my times of need there were there .

2)Ramadhan : food at home is always better during ramadhan(which I'm still going to enjoy but it wouldn't feel earnt !) , people make an effort to be nice . Ummah was much unified which I enjoyed .

3)The Quran and nasheeds : loved the way the Quran was recited , I still enjoy listening to it prolly because I don't understand it . But generally just the way it sounded especially the way mishari rasheed .

    4).............woah I couldn't think of anything else!!!!!!!!!

Lol I am not exaggerating when I say that i miss:

    Absolutely nothing Smiley

But I wasn't the most stringent of followers, nor the least bit devout.

(also, trust me, eating during ramadan after at times being forced to fast for a god you dont believe in, does indeed feel well earned Tongue )

no, because before you may (if you fasted for Allah, unlike some of us whistling2) have felt good eating after fasting all day. But it feels even better to eat when you know you were fasting for something you don't give a crap about Tongue

    praying 5 times a day

    I kid i kid

i miss the bliss that comes with ignorance. the feeling that god has chosen me and i will eventually be heaven bound.

ramadan and eid were always fun but only when it was iftar parties and eid parties.

one thing i do miss was the community / social aspect. it was easier to get along with my muslim friends and to even initiate new friendships with muslims.

really Huh? honestly all the self righteous reciting used to irritate me sooooooo much.
its funny though sometimes i would see the hajj broadcasts and the English translations of the quran in the subtitles would show how an ugly read like the quran could be made to sound beautiful Smiley

    Miss in bad ways:

    Fasting..
Going to mosque every Friday and hate to explain every new boss where I am off to.
Wasting so much time in praying all 20 taraweeh
Wasting time and money at hajj
Having whole free bar at one of my coolest work place and never been able to drink with it.
Making sure my office always provide me vegetarian food on friendly Fridays.
Never having wild party nights when I could have..

I imagined some of you guys would miss some of the food. During some of the big holidays, some of the mothers, grandmothers and elderly ladies would put on these HUGE feasts. It was like a giant buffet of home cooked meals made by everybody's mommas.

    I don't miss:
Fasting for a God I wasn't sure existed
Grudgingly learning how to pray and praying
Ensuring that every restaurant I eat at/food I buy is Halal-certified
Not dyeing my hair or painting my nails to stay "clean"

    I miss:
Absolutely nothing. Then again I was never religious, so my lifestyle didn't change drastically.

Some of you mentioned food -- I still eat it, because over here the gatherings are more of a cultural thing.

I can honestly say that I don't miss a damn thing about being Muslim. Life was better before and it is better after.

I do miss a few things like the ability to dismiss all of my problems under a certain label of "Devil's work/conspiracy theories". I also miss how I would criticise people for doing things that the religion did not approve, in an insecure and angry manner. I think it was at the age of 15 or so that I realised that God shouldn't have to help people on petty matters because somehow I thought that only the exalted and the distressed would have their prayers heard because they would be in higher priority so I wasn't quite sure of what I saw in the concept, even whilst I was agnostic, I had no idea of what to think of that higher power.

What has changed is considerable. I'm now somewhat free to do whatever I like and I have none of those barriers which stopped me from engaging in certain conversations. I have better views about a lot of things though my views about Muslims and certain religious people have severely detiorated. I think it's to do with the harsh practices in certain religions. Nevertheless, I feel as if I can now talk with the other South Asian communities and engage in topics which I once deemed as offensive and intolerable.

How can you possibly miss food when you leave Islam?  Huh?  Does Islam have a monopoly on food?  Don't you still eat tasty meals?

If anything Islam limits the food you can choose to eat and enjoy the taste of.  Since leaving Islam there is a lot more choice of what and where to eat.

I wasnt talking about food^^^^ I loved how the community was during ramadhan thats all .

Part of me feels I have lost alot of my culture after leaving Islam......like I'm less of a Somali weirdly enough .
