i wonder if there is any way to substitute sense of belonging/brotherhood that prayer in congregation gives with something not connected to a religion?

I think a lot of us were brought here by google. Verily google guides whom it wills!

Prayer and meditation allows your brain to enter an alpha wave or even theta brain wave state. (Google it)  It is one of the positive (for the individual) and addictive aspects of religions for the individual. You can replace it - either by praying (though without the meaning it's not so good) or by meditation.

I prayed Friday prayer with my friends recently, first time in ages. We took a road trip and it was either a case of coming out to them there and then or kissing carpet.

I didn't feel any sense of calm or anything. All I felt was a deep-rooted melancholy that all these people believed, or claimed to believe in this religion, this horrible conundrum of religion, and I just thought of all the people praying around the world and it just made me sad that I no longer had this pleasure. I could no longer engage in this act because I have lost my innocence to what Islam really is and there is no going back.

As the imam did an extra prayer for Libya I was filled with contempt. It was a deep-rooted angst. But then I thought, what am I doing for Libya, and realised that if these people can make themselves sleep at night better then so be it.

I'd rather be awake but sometimes, sometimes I wonder how much easier life would have been...

I'm generally just bored when I pray, even when I was a muslim. I never really felt closer to god or anything like that I guess, I felt like my actions in life is much more important.

Its interesting. Some people start speaking in tongues when they are desperate for some tangible and overwhelming feeling of serenity. The fact that Arabic is a foreign language to you alone can be enticing as foreign language tend to engage a different region of the brain the region that deals with sound and music. The combination of the atmosphere as people collectivley engage in a single activity , prayer etc may have an impact. That does not make you a Muslim and would be a mistake to assume hat you are one simply because you felt some sort of peace whilst doing this particular activity

I still feel peace when I pray by myself though. Is it because I'm conditioned to?

Even when your praying alone , you're aware that many other muslims are doing the same thing at the time you are .

i'm glad you're not so strict on yourself though, i used to feel like i broke an unwritten rule when i looked around during prayer.

Sorry, where you referring to me?

Because I do get suffocated when I go to the mosque, and I definitely do not miss praying, rather, I miss the blissful ignorance which comes from that whole concept of making duwa (supplication) after prayer to make all your problems go away. The sensation of doing something when in reality you have done nothing whatsoever. It makes life seem easier when in reality you have created a world apart from reality.

I read an article in NewScientist last week about how this kind of thing makes one feel at peace.  When we make decisions it introduces an element of stress because we have to think about whether or not we are making the right decision. When we do anything which makes us stand out from the crowd we risk being noticed, analysed, and judged, which also causes stress.

It seems that this is relaxing in part because knowing exactly what is required of you relieves stress, knowing that you fit in without having to think about it relieves stress, feeling you are a single part of a larger whole makes you feel accepted.

Apart from all that, closing your eyes alters your brain patterns and makes you feel chilled out.

Spot on . its one of the few minutes you don't have to think about what choice you are making. and do what you've been instructed to do (with free will to abandon it- thus eliminating the Fuck off reaction you'd have towards your boss telling you to bend over 4 times so your performance at work is considered a valid one )

Luftazure, is prayer always a concentrated thoughtless act? or do you sometimes get distracted by thoughts about  the events of the day/week?

    always a concentrated thoughtless act

That's exactly what it is, more or less.

No, sounds like you are meditating rather than praying.  Change the procedure, but keep you mind trained in the same way and itsll prob have the same affect

I feel inner peace after wanking, eating dinner, getting a good sleep and half a bottle of vodka.

Wouldn't say it was a spiritual revelation, sounds like trying to connect the dots to make yourself feel reassured. Everyone would like to have these "messages" and spiritual feelings from God. I laugh at them.
