  • Child marriage in Nigeria
     OP - January 02, 2009, 07:20 PM

On Channel 4 tonight at 7.30 pm there is a documentary within its 'Unreported' series on how many young girls in Northern Nigeria are being married off to much older men.

I know Nigeria is more or less split down the middle when it comes to Christians and Muslims but I'm guessing Northern Nigeria is probably majority Muslim.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    You're not wrong.

I just watched it, Nigeria's central government passed a bill on childrens' rights which, among other things, set the minimum age of marriage at 18. Among the 16 states in the largely muslim north only one ratified it, and even they altered that part of the bill to set the minimum age of marriage as puberty.

Hopeless lot, even the moderate imam interviewed rejected the law against child marriage.  Between them and the christians killing child "witches" in the south, it doesn't sound like Nigeria is a great place to be a child.

Nigeria is absolute crap to be a kid. There's also the running sore of pentecostal churches and so called 'witch children', a topic also aired on tv lately.

Religion is ignorance giftwrapped in lyricism.

Conclusion:  Religion is harmful to childrens' health & wellbeing.  Period.

    Atheism is a non-prophet organization.

You don't think teaching kids that God loves you but will send you to hell if you don't believe in His nailing his own son to a cross is perverse?

Well, when its the religious authorities preventing them from ratifying a law against child marriage in the north, and a different set of religious authorities whipping up hysteria against child witches in the south, that is a reasonable conclusion to come to.  It is in Nigeria, anyway.

    no, it?s logically flawed.
It?s SOME religious authority that does that and thereby causing harm. NOT "Religion" per se "harming children". Roll Eyes
Just like SOME atheists kill for the proletariat, ya know.
