AUSTRALIA'S Cardinal George Pell has described the biblical story of Adam and Eve as a sophisticated myth used to explain evil and suffering rather than a scientific truth.

Most European based Christian churches believe this now dr_sloth. Most of them take the bible as useful tales to explore modern life of in terms of what the moral thing to do would be, not always a literal truths, thus the ability to reform to some extent eventually inherent in western Christianity. Thus why some admit the anti-homosexual stuff does exist in the bible but say that it was due to the times it was written in and the spirit is the key, i.e love and forgiveness.

This has been a mainstream Christian position for ages. The ones who still think Genesis is literal (like some of the US fundies) are not the majority of Christians. Thomas Aquinas was arguing against literal interpretations of Genesis back in the middle ages.

^ Yeah, and the RCC accepts evolution but believes it was God-guided or something. Western Christianity isn't really that anti-science anymore. I don't  understand why the U.S. has so many Christian creationists, and politicians who openly say evolution is crock wacko

Islam still takes everything literally. Yunus lived in a whale, Adam and Eve, Noah's ark, all of it. It's easily the battiest of the 3 Abrahamic religions.

Literal interpretations of the bible have never been the excepted view among Christians (until the protestant reformation of course), if memory serves early Christians criticized Jews for holding the Hebrew bible as literal.

Western Christianity isn't really that anti-science anymore.

Western Christianity as well as eastern has never really been anti-science at all.

    Islam still takes everything literally.

But isn't it the case that to deny the existence of Adam makes you are kafir?
it isn't just that Islam is 'still' taken literally, but that it always will be, by definition.

Holy shit, too bad people can't do that in Islam without the fear of becoming an apostate.

^They did, over a thousand years ago, with the mutazalites and so on. The shame is that Islam is too insecure in itself to speculate in such a way today.

Oh, I didn't know. But yeah, I can't imagine anyone doing that in the modern day, without having death threats.

You could do it if you were a highly paid individual who didn't have to worry about being chased out of his local mosque. To say christianity has never been anti-science is quite simply not true. Anyone remember the dark ages? The inquisition? Galileo?

Islam had a golden age that lasted, what, three centuries? They did good in that time, but for the last near on a thousand years they take their religion to seriously.

What creeped me out was about two weeks ago, there was a debate in Parliament on giving greater freedoms to religious people and the MP was challenged by one of his fellows. "Would that include creationism?" Yes. Yes it would. It would give them the freedom to teach creationism as valid. All in the name of tolerance of course. Fuck, we're going to turn into the next America at this rate.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
