    What science is or isn't about is perhaps a tangent from this thread, the only point I wanted to make was that science cannot settle a truth claim such as 'choice is an illusion'.

    I disagree, science is the best bet we have of settling such questions. If we drop the concept of truth being all important then the closest we have to answering such a question is understanding and that to me is science. Unless of course you mean there is a greater medium to settle such questions than understanding itself?

    Hmm... OK, Zed - btw please watch that documentary, it's not that long (45 min I think) - I would be very interested in your opinion - especially the last half about brain types and inherited behaviours.

    It seems a little pedantic to just keep saying "science cannot establish truth". I actually agree (I have not mentioned truth nor science in this thread). But that doesn't mean we must ignore the evidence and results of experiments on behaviour either biological and social.

    That biology and environment shape our behaviour is as close to fact as we can get on most things and to just sit back and claim "Science cannot establish truth" is puerile and irrelevant.

    The REAL question is how much of our behaviour is affected by these things?

    that is actually the definition of Scientific investigation/exploration. Yes you are right Z10.,  however good a scientific theory/hypothesis may be and how many number experimental results may  support that theory, still one can ask questions and one can improve the concepts with in that model., But the other side is utter humbug and nonsense..

    When I say other side..I mean  the religious side their scriptures, their statements  and their answers on big questions. Even if those statements from scriptures are remotely true, still to improve upon them is to question and to experiments with them..

    It will never give 100% truth since science at its most basic fundamental level operates under assumptions, but it will give us the highest probability of what most people would agree as being right. It is, as others have put it, a self-correcting process. My question to z10 is if we can't settle any questions with what we have now, then what's the point if we will never reach the "truth"? A lot of us wouldn't even be here if we followed such thinking, right?

    Btw, thanks for posting the documentary Hassan, fascinating stuff.
