I know I've mentioned this book before, but it's a must read. I'm currently reading it on PDF format and just made an order for a hard copy.
You can find it here:
http://www.irshadmanji.com/reformist-quranIt's a really amazing, no bs reinterpretation. Forget orthodoxies, just pick up this book and a bit of independent thinking. It even argues that nowhere in the Quran is the case for hadith/sunnah made -- the verses that orthodox Muslims claim do have been misinterpreted/mistranslated.
If you read Arabic, checking what the Quran actually says while reading this helps quite a bit.
These are some of the arguments the book makes and strongly supports:
- The Quran doesn't justify hitting women.
- It doesn't justify marrying young girls.
- It doesn't make non-Muslims pay a tax.
- It doesn't justify cutting the hands of thieves.
...and I just started reading it.
It really makes you question yourself and what you have been taught about the Quran/Islam.
Definitely a must-read for all Muslims and anyone interested in reforming Islam.
