The BBC had one of these slide shows about the Muslim head coverings for women the other day.

    Thanks BBC.

Know your medieval / stone-age oppresive patriarchal uniforms for Muslim women!

Mashallah, If only every woman dressed like this there would be no rape in the world.

The word hijab comes from the Arabic for veil and is used to describe the headscarves worn by Muslim women. These scarves come in a myriad of styles and colours. The type most commonly worn in the West is a square scarf that covers the head and neck but leaves the face clear.

The niqab is a veil for the face that leaves the area around the eyes clear. However, it may be worn with a separate eye veil. It is worn with an accompanying headscarf.

The burka is the most concealing of all Islamic veils. It covers the entire face and body, leaving just a mesh screen to see through.

The al-amira is a two-piece veil. It consists of a close fitting cap, usually made from cotton or polyester, and an accompanying tube-like scarf.

The shayla is a long, rectangular scarf popular in the Gulf region. It is wrapped around the head and tucked or pinned in place at the shoulders.  The khimar is a long, cape-like veil that hangs down to just above the waist. It covers the hair, neck and shoulders completely, but leaves the face clear.  The chador, worn by many Iranian women when outside the house, is a full-body cloak. It is often accompanied by a smaller headscarf underneath.

Problem with the burka is that you can still see a shadow of face inside. Astagfirullah  mysmilie_977

Why can they completely cover the head with a bucket or something, and make them walk around with a lead behind their husbands?  Marshallah, that could only be done by a sister who was a true believer.

Now that is far too kinky.

But now that we have internet shopping there is no longer any legitimate reason for the women to leave their houses?

I think these days in the West there's a vast plethora of different islamic clothes women wear.  And of course, the context also matters.
    For example:
    • girls wearing a hijab with skin-tight jeans.
    • women wearing the niqab while driving.  Or worse still, while teaching others to drive.
    • women with niqab behind the counter in banks, or teaching assistants in nursery schools

What are we going to see next?  Women with niqab in discos?

Actually, I do hope that it does come to that - to the point where clothes that are supposed to convey a religious message are in itself stripped off this supremacist meaning.
Hence they would become just a piece of clothing.

    @Kenan:

The hijab with skin-tight jeans (which is not uncommon in the West) already defeats the point of the hijab as a covering to preserve a woman's modesty.

True. However the supremacist implications of wearing it still remain.

In some places I've seen females who wear almost identical clothing being treated quite differently by males within their community. Girls in more tightly-fitting clothing may evoke scornful remarks or crude attempts at courtship whilst similarly dressed girls who cover their hair tend to be given respect. Since the guys don't tend to be religious (or the girls, for that matter) I'd hazard a guess that it's more to do with branding women as being part of 'the community', and reinforcing that division by chastising women who fail who bear the brand (hijab in this instance). Just one example of the caustic effects that identity politics has had in those urban ghettos - that my female asian friends expect harrassment in some areas from other asians for failing to 'identify'.

The one that listed khimar got it wrong. That's not a khimar. Or it could be, if one takes it as a general word. But it's not what Muslim women mean when they say "khimar."  @@

In the West? Shit, you see that in the Middle East.  Hijabis with five pounds of makeup on, or cleavage bearing tops, etc.  Hijab is like an accessory now.  Women wear it b/c it's easier to get married or all their friends do or it's just a trend right now or whatever. I know so many people in my family who have it on, off, on, off, don't wear jilbab or abaya, etc.  just depending on what the current mood and fashions are.

I personally don't have a problem with women in niqab working, and I wouldn't compare it to women going to discos.  In fact, I think it could be good for at least some of them (ie, working out in the world instead of sitting at home in purdah and only going to the masjid for the "women's dars").

This is one of the main reasons I don't like the idea of a ban. In effect it socially excludes a group of women who are already marginalised and have limited interaction with people outside of their family / community. It will also probably play into the hands of radical narratives that the "West is against Muslims" specifically, etc.

    thinkfree,

The extremists will always find something to rant about and say that the West is trying to kill off Islam.  What they never look at is, what they are doing that is morally wrong and frankly incompatible with a secular liberal society.  I'm not too sure myself whether it is wise to ban the niqab or not.  But what the goverment and the media need to do is put the religious elite under pressure to relax the rules, so that women don't feel under social pressure to wear the niqab.  When preachers continue preaching that wearing of the niqab an important part of being a Muslim woman, it really doesn't help to resolve the problem.  And worse still, when teenage girls are taught to wear the niqab, we are letting the problem get transmitted to the next generation.  I wrote a blog post about this.  See http://www.atheistnexus.org/profiles/blogs/teenage-muslim-girls-wearing
So it's like mopping the floor while the water is leaking.
