    German would be easier to learn as an English speaker, as they are both Germanic languages. However, I think that learning French would be more useful as it is more widely spoken than German.

    Also, what did you end up choosing?

    I'm incredibly biased, since I'm absolutely in love with the French language. A couple of years ago I used to like German culture as well, and learned a bit about the language, but if I were in your situation I'd pick Paris faster than you could say "Oh là là!" In fact, French is one of the reasons I'm planning to go to Montreal next year for university.

    It's a common problem with Paris. Generally, the further away from Paris that you get, the more foreigner friendly the french become.. although it's not a guarantee if you don't speak french fluently and with even the slightest hint of an English accent  Tongue

    Yeah, I really want to visit non-Paris France, I'm sure the experience will be nicer. Not that it was THAT bad, mind you. I speak French like a native and when I can focus, I can produce a pretty convincing Parisian accent. People weren't as bitchy towards me as they were towards my boyfriend, who doesn't speak a word. There was a clear difference in the way we were treated. Which is retarded. We are tourists, you can't expect us to learn your fucking language if we're here just for a week.

    Seems kinda obvious now.

    But it appears from that sentence that Esperanto has some Slavic influence. Two of the words, vi and pravas, look kinda like the Russian vy (вы) for you and pravda (правда) for true, correct, etc.

    The base roots are estimated to be 60% Romance, 30% Germanic, and 10% Slavic. However, that's just the roots -- the language itself is highly agglutinative.

    How about you give it a try for a couple of weeks? You won't master the language, but you'll learn a lot about the grammar and the culture.

    If I were to get my ass in gear and finally sit down to properly learn a language it would be, if anything, your mother tongue of Arabic. And I don't have time to study two languages at once given uni work and so forth. Sorry, but my Esperanto studies will have to wait until I don't have other more pressing engagements.  Smiley

    I see your problem , Unechance.  I think you need to make up your mind where to go first and then you'll know which language you need to learn.

    If you don't have two weeks, it shouldn't take more than an hour to at least go through this.

    Plus, there's always the propaedeutic value.
