  • Teenage Jehovah's Witness 'died after refusing blood'
     OP - May 18, 2010, 08:26 PM

    This makes me mad.

Because of this religious belief this boy was brainwashed into refusing a blood transfusion and lost his life. This religious precept is responsible for his death.

Next time Jehovas Witnesses come to my doorstep or I cross paths with them they are getting a piece of my mind on this one.

    +++++++++++

Teenage Jehovah's Witness 'died after refusing blood'

A teenage Jehovah's Witness crushed by a car as it crashed into a West Midlands shop is thought to have died after refusing a blood transfusion.

Joshua McAuley, 15, was airlifted to hospital from the incident in Smethwick on Saturday but died later that day.

Elder at Smethwick's Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Clive Parker said Joshua, who worshipped there, had "made a stand on the blood issue".

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Thursday.

Joshua is believed to have told doctors at Selly Oak Hospital not to give him a blood transfusion on religious grounds.

Jehovah's Witnesses refuse transfusions because they believe the use of products derived from blood is forbidden by God.

It is a very complex area that has to be approached on a case-by-case basis

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said Joshua's family, who live in Smethwick, did not wish to comment.

Mr Parker said Joshua was conscious after the accident in Cape Hill. He added the family worshipped at Smethwick's Kingdom Hall.

He said: "A mother has lost her son, and Joshua had a brother. He has lost his brother, he was there in the morning and then gone by the afternoon. They are terribly distressed."

A spokesman for Selly Oak Hospital would not comment on the individual case but described the issue as an "extraordinarily complex area" with no set rules.

"There is no automatic right to override parental wishes or that of a minor. It is a very complex area that has to be approached on a case-by-case basis," he said.

Two other adults were injured in the crash, which happened in the Cape Hill area at 1114 BST.

Police said a 24-year-old woman was in a serious but stable condition in hospital and a 32-year-old man sustained a suspected broken arm and leg.

A 28-year-old man from the Winson Green area of Birmingham was arrested after the crash and bailed pending further inquiries.

I have another question.  He was 15, was he too young to make that decision for himself?

This is so sad and stupid.

I used to work with a jehovah's witness girl and she was only 17, and yet she will never come out for drinks after work because she didn't want to associate with the wayward drunken crowd lol.  They remind me of muslims.

I don't really think that's the same thing. Choosing not to drink is different than a life or death situation.

    The problem is this:

"There is no automatic right to override parental wishes or that of a minor. It is a very complex area that has to be approached on a case-by-case basis," he said.

An elder of his church is also quoted as saying that the lad  "made a stand on the blood issue".

This is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Elders of a church shouldn't be putting this idea into the mind of youngsters.

    memes, memes and more memes.

Jehovah's Witness is another virus of the mind in the form of ideas, which doesn't care about it's victims, as long as it survives and propagates itself.  Bizarrely, people are attracted to a religion that sticks to it's principles no matter how difficult the situation may be.  Radical Muslims also find their brand of Islam attractive for this reason among others. Okay, I've been meaning to ask this for a while, but what the heck is a meme? The first thing I think of when you say meme is mime lol.

So a meme is simply an idea that can be copied by different people? So are religions essentially memes?

Also look up memeplex.  Religions are a massive collection of ideas that get passed from generation to generation, so they are called memeplexes.  It's like a gang of memes that survive better as a collection.  Of course, the memeplex is constantly evolving as it gets transmitted with additions/subtractions/modifications.

damn thats f.ed up.. its things like this that make me think its time for society to get rid of religion for good. but in time i think this will all happen anyway
in a natural way. islamists and the catholic church are on their way of destroying the two biggest religions right now. R.I.P Joshua

Makes me feel glad I wasn't born to a family that's ridiculously strict on religion like that. If I was in a life-or-death situation, and alcohol was the only way to save my life, my family would consider it haram and an act of suicide if I refused.

That's a sad story, but I don't think the hospital should have allowed the parents to refuse on his behalf.  They should have got a court order or something, given that he was a minor.

The question is when do we ever listen to a 15 year old? And now we let them make life and death decisions?
  • Re: Teenage Jehovah's Witness 'died after refusing blood'

I feel very sad about this. :( Such a shame...

But, you know, it leaves a question to all religious people who are skeptical of science, do they go to the church when they're sick or to the hospital or doctors? I'm assuming the latter, hospital and doctors, is the case.

We have Jehovah's Witness people knocking on our door sometimes. The most recent one asked me "are you interested in finding God?", I restrained myself from asking him where God specifically was, and unloading questions too deep for he himself to answer, but I just said that I wasn't interested...

....Aaaand I've gone off topic again. I hope no one is keeping tallies.  Cry

It breaks my heart to read these stories, but there are so many people, including children that have committed suicide like this. Yes it's suicide, but the JW's view it as the ultimate obedience to god. Kinda like the terrorists but in a bizarre inverted kinda way.
All the JWs that read this story will marvel at how brave this young man was. His story will probably make its way into one of the religion's publications about being loyal to the 'organization' and god. And to them, he'll be resurrected in Paradise any way, so it's no real biggie  Roll Eyes

I am SO glad I never got into any major medical injuries as a child. My mum would have probably let me die!  Cry

    You were a Witness?

Interesting to hear about how he might be used as an example of great faith by the flock, almost like a martyr of some sort.

    So, so wrong.

Yes billy I was a witness.

There was actually a JW magazine that was published over a decade ago in praise of all the children that died like this

Even as a child, I always felt very uneasy and sad looking at that article  Cry
