  • How do you handle depression?

Well most people including me will get mild depression (that includes general sadness, problems concentrating, forgetfulness, negative thoughts and social withdrawal)

I just looked up the treatment-

    Quote
Mild depression can usually be treated with cognitive/behavioral therapy. The therapist teaches you how to recognize and stop negative thoughts and how to replace them with positive, healthy ones. You also learn to take power over situations and to choose your behavior, rather than reacting automatically to the depressed feelings. You learn how to stay motivated by measuring your actions and progress toward specific goals.

That's my main problem. Words hurt. The ones from family members always do the trick and I always let those thoughts ferment.

Now I  try to avoid negative people and put myself out there, becoming  more motivated to try new things. It's hard to though when those people who chain you down are immediate family members.   Tongue

Stardust, there's a clear difference between depression and a broken arm. Depression can be treated by cognitive or behavioral therapy. It can be treated by "telling yourself to be strong". A broken arm has no cure except medicine.

However, with that being said, I have no problem with people taking medication to manage their depression. Especially if it's considered to be a physical brain disorder by scientists.

Just because in your specific case, this personal motivation thing has elevated your level of depression, you can't then go assuming it'll work for everybody else and make it seem as those who can't are just simple 'not trying hard enough'.

@Kutta: Treatment for depression (and other brain-disorders) are through CBT, other forms of therapy and/or medication. I know about CBT, I've been to counselling a few times. And CBT isn't just 'get stronger, mate!' It's a mental-tool implementation to help people manage, plans, steps, keeping records etc -ie a treatment with support, just as a broken arm needs care and treatment.

Just as different hardware can't support every sort of software, different brains can't use the same tools, some need updating.

Well I haven't had depression before, even though I've been depressed. So I'm not even talking from personal experience.

That's why I said that If I had been dealt with a challenge like depression, I would hope that I would find strength in myself. And unlike physical injuries, that strength could prove helpful.

Another thing I've been hearing is that, 'just rationalize it out'. Well I can tell you two researchers I know in astrophysics, both very capable of rational thinking, have dealt with mental problems, these are just the two who voiced their problems. There's an emotional ingrained element to our lives that's beyond our control, which as much as you try to tame will find some way to come out fighting. That part of us which is formed through our experiences whilst growing up.

Stardust, I'm not saying that the only way to cure or help your depression is by rationalizing it out. I'm just saying that it is a good option. Obviously, if it doesn't work, then there are other means. I was just pointing this out because no amount of rationalizing could ever cure a broken arm or a broken leg.

What I was highlighting is that you need treatment for both -just different sorts of treatment. Medication for depression (and other mental disorders) is one form of help. So you shouldn't go trying to say 'just be stronger' 'just be rational' (i.e saying that they're a weak person -and that's how they will view your advice and that'll reinforce their negative self image) to people suffering these things because I'm pretty sure, because of the fact such negativity is attached to getting medication for mental illness, people will have explored such options of personal motivations as much as they can given their state of mind before diving to accept medication.

if i want to handle my depression, i cry but sometimes even the tears wont come out my eyes... I don't know   I prefer not talking to myself, It's stupid even to try to find a solution because depression is something that won't let you do anything so I  just become a passive observer and wait until I become normal

I do the same to be honest.  I have realised that this is all I can do.  Just wait it out.  If there is one thing I have noticed, it comes in waves, and it goes eventually, or at least doesn't feel as bad.

I understand where both of you are coming from (Barbie and Inzy),everyone suffers from depression to varying degrees and you have to at first acknowledge it and play the waiting game.

Unlike some of my friends I've never really suffered depression (that would concince me to bed or require medication) as I am always doing something (like reading mostly).

Lol I read IN bed when I am super down.

Doing stuff does help though, since I went to college, since I started uni, I just have less time to sit around and mope.

It doesn't work that way for everyone though, some people drop out of study or work because of depression.  I guess for me, having spent so many years as a recluse, I have already wasted too many years to risk dropping out because I am depressed.

I lose myself in my studies, and it makes the stuff I am depressed about, fade away....at least whilst I study.  That's a good thing though, means unlike before, it is absent more than it is here.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

There's no real way I deal with depression other than not succumbing to it. When I'm depressed I don't want to do anything, I feel like my energy is sapped, the colours dim, all that. I just keep going. As much as I'd like to just lie in bed and wallow in self pity, that would make it worse. So I push myself. I get up, I shower, I force myself to eat a little when I can go for days with no appetite, and I do what needs to be done.

That's the best I can do. I can feel it, but it's my choice whether or not to be controlled by it. If I let it take over, it would get so much worse. Keep going, address the problems whatever they may be, move on.

`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

    Pretty good advice.

It is indeed, though I think it depends on the person as some people can try to break through depression just like some try to fight through a cold, but the again you may need some help or intervention.

A colleague of mine known for being very strong and resilient had a break down. We were all shocked but in retrospect it was the culmination of a whole load of things. Smiley

Try to work through it yourself. It's okay to feel self pity, it's okay to be afraid, it's okay ask the questions but not know the answers. But I've found that interacting with others is best to overcome the slightest feeling of detachment. Albeit in a constructive manner.
