    Meh. 21 and never had a job before, except for tutoring. Anyone got any first job horror stories to dissuade me from applying? Smiley

    Or, what's your current job like? Is it your dream job?

    You're not selling yourself very well there, Eph.  You shouldn't say your resume is crap, you should say "my resume leaves a lot of room for future potential" or some blah like that.   grin12

    When I was 16 framing houses for min. wage in the hot sun. It sucked. Shortly thereafter became a dishwasher. That was okay. Stayed in the restaurant industry for a few years after that-- dishwasher at another place, then a prep cook, then for the next few years after, a line cook at various restaurants. Also worked as a taxicab driver, a package handler at UPS, and a helper on a beer distributor truck. Only ever worked two jobs that required a college degree, and both were part-time/project work. The wages sucked at most of those jobs, some were more enjoyable than others.

    Wouldn't say my current job is my dream job, but there's a lot to like about my employer and my current line of work is the most suitable for me at this time (and has been for many years now), though I'm keeping my eyes open for other opportunities, as well as more money.

    I worked briefly as an interpreter. I didn't get too many hours cuz there is a very small demand for Arabic translators in the Northeast of England. They paid me well ad even reimbursed me for fuel/transport costs.
    I worked with the Jobcentre and one time the hospital. I also worked with a psychiatric clinic as a phone translator.


    Funny anecdote: after the war, the Americans disbanded the Iraqi Army and police. There was a period of anarchy and chaos until 2005. So many people started moonlighting as Taxi drivers using their own cars since nobody was there to enforce the laws and no Taxi driver licenses were issued. This practice continues to this date.
    Anyway, I did this a couple of times myself. I didn't need the money but it was fun. In Iraq when you stop the taxi, you don't just get in the car, first you have to tell the driver where you're going and negotiate the fare. The driver has the right to refuse any customer. So I only took the jobs that I knew the destinations for.

    One day, I picked this old abaya-clad lady and her 20-something son. They were very nice and the lady jokingly offered to marry me to her daughter. We were driving northbound on one of the main highways in Baghdad and I noticed many people walking in groups southband in the direction of the main football stadium in Baghdad. So I unthinkingly said "is there a match today? are they going to the stadium?". Then all out of the sudden the guy pulls out a gun and starts threatening me. I immediately stopped the car. He was like "why do you hate Shias? you have been ruling for 40 years what do you want? why are you mocking us?". After I begged him to put the gun down and explain, he told me that it was only 3 days before Ashura and that these people are pilgrims who were traveling by foot to Karbalah (60 miles south of Baghdad) to visit Imam Hussein's shrine. This practiced was banned by Saddam. I told him I was Shia but I wasn't aware. His mother also begged him to put the gun down. Anyway, I had to tell him some Shia practices and some info on the Imams so that he believes me. Long story short, he apologized, his mother gave me some candy and a chewing gum, and I refused to take any money !!!

    I still haven't told my dad about it. He would be livid considering I didn't need the money.

    The first job I had was making and selling jewelry at age 10. Then I worked in a men's suit store briefly, before starting my own airbrushing tattoo business at around 15.

    Best job: Features editor for University newspaper. It almost made me go insane, though I could write about anything I wanted and my coworker and I would show up for noon meetings hammered every week. I worked there for three years and was never fired nor even threatened to be fired.

    Worst job: Waitress for pancake house/breakfast joint. I quit three times. (Once after a week, once after three weeks, and once after a month; I kept coming back out of desperation/thought I'd give it another shot. No can do.)

    Job that made me most fear for the future of humanity: Marking first-year undergrad philosophy papers. It would be funny if it wasn't so scary that these are supposed to be the brightest leaders of the future.

    I've had a million jobs though, I tend to like to mix it up a lot -- don't like sticking in one place too long. These are some of the jobs I've had in the last 6 months, since I graduated:

    Poker dealer for seedy underground club
    Freelance journalist for religious/social justice mag
    English conversation partner for Koreans
    .
    Assistant for (gay?) muslim scientist
    Brand Ambassador for Blackerry at BEP concert
    .
    Housecleaner

    So basically this is the extent to what I can do with a Philosophy degree.

    My first job was awesome. I worked at a video rental store. I would usually work nights on weekends, and after the evening rush I would sit around for about 3 hours, cleaning done etc and nothin to do, and just watch movies and eat free candy/chocolate. Also I got free unlimited video and game rentals, so when I got off work I would take home some movies or N64 games and stay up the rest of the night Afro

    My first job was as a doctor in Middlesborough. Then I worked as a civil servant in London. Now am back working as a doctor, but will be leaving (permenantly) by August.
    My job is great in so many ways, I just hate the interfering crap that stops me from doing it, and at the end of the day, the balance tips towards me doing something else with my life, because the crap just isn't worth it.

    And I don't see how my jobs make me cool. Especially compared to my twin brother who already has a full time, well paying government job, I feel like such a bum.

    Great to hear everyone's experiences. Good thread!

    My first job was went I moved to UK for uni and was a house cleaner and pet sitter. Really enjoyed looking after the animals and learning all of their mad habits and personalities.

    I volunteered as an IT and english tutor assistant for ex-substance users so not sure if that counts as a job but I enjoyed that too. Lovely people despite their unsavoury background. Great feeling to help them in what little way I could and see them get their life back on track bit by bit.

    Then I ended up getting a 'proper' job related to my degree and it's been downhill from there Grin

    My first job was a summer vacation job as a student.  I worked in a noodle making factory, and basically put metal plates onto a factory line ALL DAY so the machine could squirt pasta onto it :bigyawn:

    Believe me, I never wanted to take them home.  They were a small cakes of dried noodles and by the end of the day I was sick of the site of them.

    I started off in sales, at 16. I moved away for university and couldn't get a transfer (the company doesn't have many branches). I don't have to work for money, so i've been concentrating on my studies but I hvae worked temporarily at NEXT, Ede & Ravenscroft (professional graduation photographers) and for my university.  I start my paid placement (technically not a job since monies earned are not taxed, yay) on the 8th.

    I get a buzz working in sales, especially given the first company I worked for was very ethical so it's not all about the hard sell/most you can get out of a customer. I wouldn't want to work as a general co-worker in sales as a career move, though.

    You could find plenty of jobs and pass plenty of interviews if you're fit.

    At 15 my first job was at a metal works plant, didn't spend long...  I lost some 20 kg in one month.

    -waiter
    -fast-food
    -internet-caffe
    -puncher (the guys who puts the answers of opinion polls on computers)
    -debate trainer in high-schools
    -interpreter - no money but some university credits

    Freelanced as an IT dogsbody from about 14, then supplemented with temp work from 16 (mail rooms, dishwashing, etc).
