right now there is thunder and lightning close to where i live, is it still safe to keep the computer on? or will it all break if lightning strikes down nearby

Hm. I'm not sure. Best go onto the roof with an umbrella and wait until the storm passes, just to be on the safe side.

Probably the worst that could happen is you get a power surge, and if you're not plugged into a surge protector (which your computer should always be) then it's possible your harddrive or other hardware could get fried.
