    This!

Anyway, a Wahabi would be someone who follows a fundamentalist Islam that rejects the four major schools of thought and says that Muslims should just follow the Qur'an and the Hadith. They would be described as being fundamentalist and literalist. There consider the word "Wahabbi" to be derogatory and prefer to be called "Salafis"

And the favourite saying of the Wahabbi is "Where is your daleel brother?!"

    Quote
Wahhabism is a puritanical form of Sunni Islam and is practiced in   Saudi Arabia and Qatar, although it is much less rigidly enforced in the latter. The word  “Wahhabi” is derived from the name of a Muslim scholar, Muhammad bin Abd al  Wahhab, who lived in the Arabian peninsula during the eighteenth century (1703-1791).  Today, the term “Wahhabism” is broadly applied outside of the Arabian peninsula to refer  to a Sunni Islamic movement that seeks to purify Islam of any innovations or practices  that deviate from the seventh-century teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and his  companions.

    History of Wahhabism:
Muhammad bin Abd al Wahhab, whose name is the source of the word “Wahhabi,” founded a religious movement in the Arabian peninsula during the eighteenth century (1703-1791) that sought to reverse what he perceived as the moral decline of his society. In particular, Abd al Wahhab denounced many popular Islamic beliefs and practices as idolatrous. Ultimately, he encouraged a “return” to the  pure and orthodox practice of the “fundamentals” of Islam, as embodied in the Quran and in the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Muhammad bin Saud, the ancestral founder of the  modern-day Al Saud dynasty, partnered with Abd al Wahhab to begin the process of  unifying disparate tribes in the Arabian Peninsula. Their partnership formed the basis for  a close political relationship between their descendants that continues today.

So would wahabism be directly correlated to shariah law, then?

Wahhabis follow a very literalists and puritanical form of Islam that they claim is the pure and uncorrupted Islam of Muhamad and the first generation - the Salaf - which is why they are also called Salafis.

It is the state religion of Saudi Arabia and has spread all over the Muslim world influencing every corner - though they are not by any means the majority - they do tend to be very vocal and active.

Yes they certainly support Shari'ah Law and see it as the only legitimate rule of law for mankind and seek to implement it wherever they live - though unlike the group known as HizbuTahrir (and al Muhajoroun) they don't see this as a top down process (i.e. topple the state and replace it with a Khalifah) but a bottom up process, as in they want to bugger everyone change people through Da'wa and hope to change the society that way.

In recent times the two militant movements have largely merged in the UK and are often indistinguishable.

If only they were as adamant about proof of the religion as they are for proof in the religion.

I would say yes. Though some say they are influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood (Hassan al-Banna and Sayyid Qutb and especially Azzam - which is true...) - and you will hear moderate Wahhabis (I know the words are oxymorons) adamantly rejecting that al-Qaeda are wahabbis  Salafis (they don't like the term Wahhabi) - but they're just talking shit and trying to distance themselves from al-Qaeda.

You see the Wahhabis have split into "moderate" Wahaabis (those who support Saudi Scholars) and the "Jihadi" Wahhabis - those who support Al-Qaeda (and HATE the rulers of Saudi Arabia)

ps The Muslim Brotherhood though separate from Wahhabis originally - are now pretty much the same.

There was a feature series about Sufis in Kuwait in the newspaper some years ago and it had to be cut short because a bunch of Salafis or what-have-yous protested and started writing articles talking about how the Sufis are not Muslim or whatever. wacko
