What happened to her is absolutely horrific, but I don't see how her experience can be used to build a case against the religion. To my knowledge islam does not advocate rape and has no penalty for not wearing the hijab. As far as I can see this is clearly not a case of good people doing evil things in the name of religion, but rather evil people doing evil things.

Yes I too don't see how her experience can be used to build a case against the religion.  But I don't consider Islam a religion stifleddoubt. It is a 1400 year Cult of Muhammad who happened to be a orphan kid of Arabian pagan parents. Its unprecedented growth is  not because of its strength due its  Morally superior teachings/preachings   BUT BECAUSE NO ONE ALLOWED TO QUESTION IT since its birth.

Huh? That's what I was trying to do. Let me rephrase then. If they're acting out of religious zealotry then I can see how they might justify making hijab compulsory as part of shariah law, but how would they justify prison rape, which is zina?

Perhaps it's because anyone who rebels against the Ayatollah is rebelling against allah and therefore an apostate?  Or maybe the guards don't give a fuck about religion either.

it is pre execution rape, as virgins can't be executed.

It isn't so much to be blamed on Islam directly but more on the social stigma that gets attached to a raped woman in the culture.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

That is the reason, young girls are raped by prison guards before being executed in Iran. Also, Iranians (may be all Muslims) believe that non-virgin women always go to hell. I guess that the prison guards who rape go to heaven to fornicate with 72 houris.

Women who get raped have always suffered from social stigma, even in the western cultures, specially in Greece, Italy, Portogal, Poland, Spain and most of East European countries, but they are not killed or accused of adultry. In many caes, they are helped by nuns. I personally know about few women who would shelter women who were raped or became pregnant out of wedlock. Something like this will never happen in any Islamic country. On the contary those women will be killed along with the unfortuante girls.

It is only in Muslim countries that women who are raped are thrown in jail or stoned for the crime of "adultry".

Women, even Muslim women, with few exceptions, do not want to dress in uncomfortable ugly hideous grosteque garments made of polyester. They wear them because they are forced to, not because of modestly. Women care wear modest dresses which are comfortable but will not confirm to the Islamic norm.

That is When freedom of expression is at work with some strong support either from State or from society.  But force does work.. In fact history of Islam itself is a an example of that. Force and fear works with people, works with animals. Essential it is built in to biology. Off course there are some  exceptions to the rule.

You cannot ultimately maintain if it the person is unwilling.  You may force them initially and find a way to accept it willingly
