    CAIRO – A Saudi judge has asked several hospitals in the country whether they could damage a man's spinal cord  as punishment after he was convicted of attacking another man with a cleaver and paralyzing him, the brother of the victim said Thursday.

    Abdul-Aziz al-Mutairi, 22, was left paralyzed and subsequently lost a foot after a fight more than two years ago. He asked a judge in northwestern Tabuk province to impose an equivalent punishment on his attacker under Islamic law, his brother Khaled al-Mutairi told The Associated Press by telephone from there.

    If you were paralysed by a mad man with a cleaver you'd want the attacker to be punished. In this case I agree with the 'eye for an eye' concept  yes

    Burden? BURDEN?! By paralyzing people, they won't be able to commit crimes again! Sharia is perfect! It will eliminate crime!

    Unless you're part of that society I don't think you, I or anyone else has a right to say what saudi laws should and shouldn't be.

    Ugh, then why is Islam trying to impose it's own beliefs and laws onto wester society?
    I suppose it's fine if Hijabs are illegal then here, innit?

    That's not what I argued. I was commenting on the wisdom of such a law.

    Should we really leave every country and group of people to their ways? Do you believe it was wrong to pressure Saudi Arabia into banning slavery? I think there are some human rights abuses that should never be tolerated and other countries should try their best to influence the offending governments in order to stop such practices.

    Islam isn't do anything.  Are SOME muslims trying to impose their beliefs onto western society? yes. Do I support them? no. But hey at least they don't do it via war eh? Make hijab illegal but then don't claim to support freedom then innit?

    As long as their ways aren't imposed on others yes. Slavery still exists in most parts of the world. In the gulf arab countries they're called migrant workers, in bangladesh, india, pakistan etc. they're called sweatshops and in the US its called the army  Cheesy Those "other countries" only care about human rights abuses when it goes with their geo-political views when it doesn't they don't care hence a certain country being very pro-egypt, jordan and saudi.

    It isn't slavery if you can quit your job and start another one. The army and sweat shops aren't slavery.
    So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    I know slavery still exists in certain forms. Islam doesn't even abolish traditional slavery, so it's okay for Islamic countries anyway, right?

    If you're being paid for work that you've chosen to do, by definition, it's not slavery.

    Every HUMAN BEING has the right to stand up  and fight against oppression of other human beings. 

    I know you don't like American Government, but one of the greatest thing about this country is the Constitution. And our Constitution protects us from cruel and unusual punishments. Its not that bad to ask that other human beings in other parts of the world have the chance to enjoy this freedom.
