  • Atheist from Dubai
     OP - August 31, 2010, 07:15 PM

    Hello everyone,
I come from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. I have been a Muslim for about 22 years and atheist for 3. The seeds of doubt however were in me all along, for as long as I remember. Much of religion didn't make any sense to me, nor did I get any comfort out of it. All I got was inner conflicts and self hate for my nature, my sexuality.
I came across Richard Dawkins talk at TED and I discovered that I was an atheist all along.

Yes, my sexuality has been the main theme of my spiritual inner conflicts, but it was hardly the only one. I was intellectually brave and I always challenged traditions. Religion never satisfied my philosophical appetite for the why and the how. I had to look elsewhere which was why I developed my love for science and philosophy.

I am glad I have across this forum, and I am looking forward to providing help to those who have been through a similar experience.

Hello, welcome in. What are your biggest gripes with religion?

Thank you and everyone for their warm welcome.
The thing I hate the most about religion is its monopoly on truth, beauty and morality. The notion that you are somehow less, immoral, or ungrateful if you don't subscribe to their world non-view.

    I am a gay man.

I often liken coming out as an Ex-Muslim to coming out as gay. I think the reaction of many Muslims to the thought they are actually ex-Muslim can be similar to the reaction some people have to the thought they are actually Gay.

Fear, confusion, anger, denial, blame etc... They can hit out at ex-Muslims because they want to try and prove they are not ex-Muslim etc...

    It's a psychological confusion.

Something I think we at CEMB really need to understand and be sensitive to.

You can be arrested for kissing in public in Dubai. I don't think that's a good sign.

It was a youtube clip advertising for CEMB.
You can be arrested for public displays, yes. It's entirely underground, but it is very active. Dubai is a very gay place.
