    Say your walking down the road late at night or your scared about something ... You know, you hear a noise downstairs just when your all cuddled up in bed and you have to muster up the courage to get out of bed, pick up a weapon of choice and hug the wall as you descend to what you assume is your doom ...

    Then it happens. You start involuntarily reading the Qu'ran in your head and I automatically feel better as I'm doing it.

    I just noticed yesterday when that scenario played out I do this without realising it, do you?

    Never have and never will. Well by "never" I mean ever since I was 16 or so. Never made Du'aa since even when I was a Muslim.

    I think parying/hope gives many people courage and peace, through a strong emotional form of cognitive dissonance.

    In answer to your question, I'm not easily scared. When I do fear something however, e.g. an attacker with a knife; I think of constructive things that can be done (e.g. think about taking a self-defence course).

    Prayers and faith may give strength and certainly are catalysts for motivating people, and it is very powerful in influenciong masses of people - but for those who know it is just an emotion, for them pragmatism is more a source of comfort once the problem has been practically solved (or be in the process of being solved). I think.

    i last prayed when i was 6 or 8 or something like that. in situations where i sense danger, i try to consciously get more adrenaline flowing(puff the chest out / grit teeth / sharpen senses etc) else i feel there is a risk of getting paralyzed.

    Like HighOctane, I'm not easily scared.  I used to instinctively say "inna lillahi wa inna ileihi rajiun" when something bad nearly happened; even after apostasy.  But I think I've even stopped that now.

    I don't walk out alone at night when it's dark and in the house if there's a noise my 2 huge dogs will take care of things.  In my head would be thoughts like "well if somebody got in they won't get out again".  grin12

    I've embraced profanity now so when I'm in trouble I tend to say 'Fuuuuck' instead of 'ya Allah!'. Tongue

    Lol - so you're in a dark alley at night and you see a man with a knife and the first thing you think is "i should enrol on a self defence course!"  Huh?

    Awww thanks, that's nice of you Poopycock, not many people like this particular breed of dog (Japanese Akita).  They're my babies.  001_wub

    BTW they did once get hold of an intruder!  ohmy    Somebody must have been trying to get into the shed in the garden.  I didn't know this at the time but the dogs had obviously heard something.  I swear I let them out because I thought they wanted a pee.  yes 

    Anyway, they shot down to the bottom of the garden growling and barking like crazy and I just knew they got something.  I ran  back indoors scared and pretended nothing was happening for about 20 mins. Then I heard them asking to come back in so I then plucked up the courage to go and investigate.  Nothing seemed untoward but it was dark so I couldn't see much. 

    The next day I went down there and there was blood everywhere and signs the shed lock had been tampered with.    I guess whoever it was scrambled injured over the back fence to get away as there was also blood all over the fence too, and lots of it. ohmy

    Go Maya's dogs!!! Sounds like they do a terrific job in protecting you....Being into equal rights, I get my wife to do the same job for me. I send her down to investigate any strange noises (and yes, I do pray in Arabic whilst she's gone, hoping that Allah will take her away from me once and for all).

    She happened to chance upon a couple of intruders a few months back... Her immediate reaction (and I am sure that this had been programmed into her for good) was to scream at them like a woman possessed, asking them why they were making so much noise and why they had not bothered to take their shoes off, thus spoiling her precious, precious carpet? Was it them that had to run around and clean up, whilst managing to bathe and change and feed a small child? Was it them that never, ever gets a minutes rest, constantly having to run around after a lazy husband, who never offers a helping hand in all the cooking, cleaning, babysitting and general maintenance that has to be done on a daily basis? Was it them who…. Needless to say, they ran for their dear lives at this stage, offering prayers to Allah for not having to put up with such a woman for more than the two minute ordeal that they had just experienced, and offering prayers also for the poor, poor husband who must deal with this constant earache for the rest of his long and pitiful life.

    No, I don't say Pslam 23 or anything like that. I just pull back the charging handle on the AK next to my bed, turn on the red-dot sight, take a peek downstairs, then go back to bed.  grin12

    Though I still do occasionally pray in particularly difficult or scary moments.

    Once when I was drunk, and I cant remember it cus I had had a bit too much, I got into an argument with a mate and afterwards was apparently reciting the Quran and asking for forgiveness..

    I dont know how cus I cant remember ANY of it normally

    Not quite, more in saying if it was something I feared then that would be the practical thing to do. If it were to happen this evening, I'd call 999 and run ... I don't believe I'm the one like Neo to face bad guys just yet!

    The dog, with people he knows, is a gentle big softie but he's getting old now and not so agile anymore.

    The black bitch, she's a cutie too but I don't completely trust her 100%, she's always the one to start any arguments between the two.  Grin
