I used to read high fantasy before I became blue-collar cool. Alvin the Apprentice was completed (although I think new books are out). LOTR. And that's as far as I got Grin

Ok, ok, ok. STOP reading WoT NOW! You need to start George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire ASAP! You'll never regret it. Plus the HBO show based on the first book, Game of Thrones, will be aired next year. You'll thank me later Smiley

Awesome book.  Afro I love Margaret Atwood! Her other books I loved - Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood.

I'm not into high fantasy that much, but that looks interesting. Thanks.

If you like short stories I would suggest Selected Shorts, the PRI program

They are short stories read by actors.

    Also the Moth

For philosophy, I would recommend a book called "The Story of Philosophy" by Will Durant. The book is almost a hundred years old now but it's a great introduction to the major ideas and personalities involved over the centuries and it's worth buying just for the introduction alone. This was the book that made me fall in love with philosophy as a 17 year old. For further metaphysics, you're going to have to wait for zoomi's recommendations.  Smiley

I've been looking for a good philosophy primer for awhile. Going to grab this book tomorrow. Sounds awesome.

Don't listen to her. WOT is awesome, she's just jealous you got there first.  Roll Eyes

In all seriousness, yes the story does slow a bit in the middle of the series, but that's to be expected, there are atleast a dozen subplots and they all need air time too.
A song of fire and ice is supposed to be awesome too, I'll probably read that next.

It's Ice and Fire, in that order Wink Oh yeah, it is awesome. Awesome is too weak a word.

Have you read Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen, Z? I've recently finished the fourth book and it's pretty solid.

Yes, I downloaded that yesterday actually. Will get round to that eventually too. I've read that it's not very descriptive though, heavily action based.

So, have you never tried WoT at all? It's an incredibly well crafted world but it does have its weaknesses I agree. I'm not exactly convinced with Jordan's portrayal of women and he does enjoy spending a lot of time describing dresses, wines, bosoms, architecture etc etc. Having said all that, I'm still enjoying the series if only for the incredible level of detail and realistic plotline.

I know I'm not Z10, I'm just BlackDog a lonely mutt howling at the moon like a deranged loony loose from Bedlam. But please, even us crazies need answers to our question(s).

    vv

Why do I keep seeing the same purple Cheshire cat? With its yellow and luminous eyes shining like a sick moon. Its teeth large as piano keys. Purring at me, a delighted sadistic smile, playing with me I tell you ITS TOYING WITH ME.

But hehe it won’t catch me nooooo. It won’t.

For I am BlackDog, scourge of the alleys, rabid flea-bitten mutt, sheltered from storms and weathered them. I have your scent. And I will pursue it, if, only IF, you don’t answer my first question. And maybe the second. Hehe, I like when things are uncertain Smiley

I also wanna sniff your butt.

Yes, it doesn't often delve into details, and at times the characters are almost caricatured. But it's huge in its scope, the battle scenes are EPIC and the dialogues are pretty cool.

I will give it a try at some point. It's just that it's too much work to get into a huge series like that right now. But I will once I've cleared a part of my 'to read' list. Oh yeah, I heard about the dresses and bosoms stuff. I actually like that  grin12 I remember reading a while ago that Jordan would monitor fan forums/websites and if people guessed what was coming next right, he would change the storylines to keep the element of surprise... If that's true, it's super lame.

Haha sorry, BlackDog. The Malazan series recommendation was aimed at you too. Other than that, to be honest, I'm not that much into fantasy. I'm a n00b who was spoiled by starting with LotR and ASoIaF, so everything else pales in comparison Tongue

Actually that's a very good question which I don't know how to answer. Let's say fiction, in the broadest sense of the word.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. Some of the scenes in books 7-9 threated to descend into soap opera territory but there is always something magical happening to keep the story moving.

If you've read LOTR you might like the Silmarillion. I almost liked it better than the more famous book of tolkien.

I think that's what interested me the most about that work - Tolkien was able to create an entire mythology that a race of people would have been proud of creating. And it was far more interesting and complex than plenty of races put together even so.  Smiley

Well creating is a big word. Tolkien didn't create it all, the mythology was partly there from before and I think he was inspired by folk-lore.

"No idea is original, there's nothing new under the sun, it's never what you do, but how it's done" - Nas

But Tolkien created a new world nonetheless. I'm not complaning, I respect and admire the man's work.

I'm sure there are artists and writers who have imagined things new and I wouldn't be surprised if Tolkien was one of them. I'm just not sure how much he's created that hasn't been imagined before, the specifics of it.

Well there were alot of ideas that seemed similar to nordic/ germanic folklore and mythologies but I think he did have a fair few original ideas. What I liked most about his mythology was his portrayal of all of reality is a song sung by gods to try and impress the one god - almost as if all of reality is a musical symphony. It may not be an original idea, I don't know, but it seemed to me to be incredibly poetic.

The man is a legend Z10 don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

He has however been criticized for his poor verse. I need to re-read LOTR to see if I'll agree.

I read the books when I was 13; I borrowed them from the public library. They were hardbound, small books with a thick spine, dressed in a dusty, green leather jacket. The pages were slightly beige from old age. Hard to imagine they had once been crisp and sharp., pages ruffling sharply like a deck of cards. It had that faint old book smell, breathing it in deeply transported me to a place where the world was still mysterious. Before the digital age, before the Internet, before satellite TV. An age where news reached people via radio and news papers and word of mouth. A world of steamships!

    Ah to be 13 again!
  • Re: What book are you reading?

I think I was also 13 when I first read LOTR, I think I finished the book in a week the first time and then took longer the second time through to get all the details I missed on the first go.  Smiley
It changed everything I thought about fiction at the time, perhaps I might have to read it again aswell.

Perhaps you missed the post above but I was wondering what you make of the WoT book so far?
