    Quote
Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, 16-year-old Amber St. Clare manages, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England-that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from events such as the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary-and extraordinary-men and women, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her trials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have. Frequently compared to Gone with the Wind, Forever Amber is the other great historical romance, outselling every other American novel of the 1940s-despite being banned in Boston for its sheer sexiness. A book to read and reread, this edition brings back to print an unforgettable romance and a timeless masterpiece

Can't wait to sink my teeth into this one.

How old are your kids Ness? If one of them has hit teenagerhood, I HIGHLY recommend Jaclyn Moriarty's books, starting with "Feeling Sorry for Celia" (it mentions condoms though, so..um...yeah).

Silenced: How Apostasy and Blasphemy Codes are Choking Freedom Worldwide

    (Clicky for piccy!)

This is a good book.  It's slightly disjointed in that the first part of the book is a look at a series of Muslim countries with a country profile, some background and then a small summation of the various stories that happen in each country.  The second part is the push for blasphemy laws in the UN which is a real interesting read to see all the things that went on in the background and the chess match between the US and the OIC in trying to get blasphemy laws implemented.

The next part looks at blasphemy laws in Western countries, their dismantling, and their now secular replacements of ' public order' and 'hate speech' laws and how they are being implemented, resisted, and pushed by various groups.  This part is a good supplement to From Fatwah to Jihad by Kenan Malik.

The small last part is three small treatises that go though how the punishment for apostasy should be reexamined.

My favorite ditty in the book shows the absurdity and the incoherence of hate speech laws especially when they are used in support of 'defamation of religion'

The section points out that these 'defamation of religion' hate speech laws are now being used against political opponents by searching though their speeches and finding anything dealing with Islam and making a lawsuit out of it.  They bring up the case of Jussi Halla-aho

    Quote
On 27 March, 2009, the Helsinki District Court ordered Halla-aho to trial on charges of ethnic agitation as well as breach of the sanctity of religion.
The charges arose after Halla-aho posted remarks related to the matter of Seppo Lehto on the Internet. In the course of the remarks, Halla-aho said the prophet Muhammad was a paedophile, and Islam is a religion of paedophilia, because Muhammad had intercourse with his 9-year-old wife and according to Sunnah Mohammed's life is exemplary in every way. He also asked if it could be stated that robbing passersby and living on taxpayers' expense are cultural and possibly genetic characteristics of Somalis. This was stated in sarcastic response to a Finnish columnist that wrote that drinking excessively and fighting when drunk were cultural and possibly genetic characteristics of Finns.[33][34]

On 8 September, 2009, the District Court convicted Halla-aho of disturbing religious worship, and ordered him to pay a fine of 330 euros.[35] The charge of ethnic agitation was dismissed. In October 2010 the Court of Appeal agreed with the District Court's conviction.[36] Both the prosecutor and Halla-aho appealed the case to the Supreme Court.[37] The Supreme Court granted a leave to appeal in May 2011, and the case is now pending Supreme Court hearing.[38]

At the trial he asked that the charges be dismissed because he could prove that charges of pedeophilia he made were, in fact, true. The court dismissed his appeal by saying this

"Logic and so called arguments of reason have no true significance in debating religious questions"

    Autobiography of Malcolm X.

That guy is something else, his life journey from a small townee to a small time hustler in harlem who got arrested for burglary and released after 6 years, despite his beliefs which i dont share, he  comes across as a black Moses who mastered the art of oratory and learn to channeled all the bottled up anger into an articulate speeches that rouses the crowd in a gatherings. One of the few charismatic people that i respect.

Reading a book is like buying a car. It's a huge decision. The magnitude of that decision keeps me from reading books altogether. One should not just grab the first book they see and start reading it. Should they?

they should... cause you can never judge a book by its cover..

reading a book is not a commitment.. you can always put it down and move on at anytime.. 30 seconds flat rule !

I can not argue with you. You make sense. But then again it's 30 seconds of my life that I'm never getting back, while the book that was worth it remained unread, did not change the way I see the world, did not make me better prepared for tomorrow... What to do?

keep your standards high.. but lower your expectations.. that way there are no disappointments and you leave room to be pleasantly surprised...

a book can be your best friend, if you let it.. it might not change your world.. but if it engages you, pulls on new ideas, or even validates old ones.. it's done it's job..
30 seconds of your time.. well.. what's the alternative??.. i could probably pace back and forth worried about something or other for the next 30 seconds...
