Hi, Eternity. Evolution is what happens while you're planning something else.
There are no choices and no road maps and no set time schedules, just tiny mutations that are selected for and against. And when enough mutations have been selected for, you have a range of new species but these are just more organisms that are doomed to become extinct ad infinitum. Some stable environment species can endure for eons and elsewhere in dynamic environments the turnover of species can be rapid.
It seems to be all about exploiting and filling niches within ecosystems. There is an old truism - Nature abhors a vacuum.
There is obviously much more to it than this though. If you have a good grounding in 19C. English, read Origin of Species by Charles Darwin: if you don't, read some biological author, like Armand Le Roi, who interprets it for you in modern English or a good biologist in the language of your choice.
