all sorts of thoughts just popped in my head on how i could make it to this thing.

reality is i got visitors this weekend coming from another city. but the idea of being apart of this is very VERY tempting.

i'm in Norway. a London trip is short and cheap that's why i considered a trip. but it would be longer than a few hours away and my friends specifically came here to hang out . I'll be in Norway again and there will be other meetings . wanna see some Vid's Though. you going Q man ?

Really great to see Thinkfree, Pariah, sc, GinG, Shahid... I think I forgot one or two names... sorry.

Not a very good turn out at the conference overall sadly - I guess having crap speakers like me instead of Dawkins (as we had last year) made a difference lol but I enjoyed it immensely nevertheless - had to leave after my talk so I guess the other guys went to the pub - very sad I had to miss that

It was filmed so you will all have the dubious pleasure of seeing me mumble a few words hehe...

1. Last year's conference was up on youtube, so I'm guessing this year's will be too.

2. 8, including Hassan. Turnout wasn't that great. I'd say around 40-50 people turned up.

3. Hassan talked about his and other people's experiences of leaving Islam and the importance of making it easier of people to apostatise.

Alom Shaha talked about the importance of ex-Muslims speaking out. He presented an extremely rosy picture of how easy it is for ex-Muslims to come out. The whole time I was thinking "Bengi, please."

He also talked about an article he wrote for the Guardian website a LOT. I lost count the amount of times I heard the words "OLD WHITE MALE ATHEISTS" yesterday.

alom shaha, even though he's sort of in a comfort zone that allows him to make it sound so easy, is actually onto something. thinkfree put it best in the first pub we went to, as it alluded to this sort of circlejerk that the 'atheist community' has become. a circle of self-confirmed beliefs and notion where they all pat each other on the back for being so intelligent, and they meet any criticism with the same line over and over again. tbh, this intellectual hard man approach comes from the fact that theists generally use rehashed arguments with blatant misunderstandings that are most easily tackled with the same approach over and over again. i think this is more of an issue than the presence of black/asian atheists, as that is something that very little can be done about. richard dawkins spoke at last year's conference and it didn't really do much other than raise the numbers who attended purely for him, and the numbers at this conference speak volumes.

i will do my best to help out when i'm done with sixth form, which is the end of june.

n.b: my concern with what alom shaha said lies in that this might become some sort of affirmative-action esque sorta thing. i mean i wouldn't want to become a prominent ex-muslim purely on the basis that i am a black somali. i would want to become prominent based upon the value of what i say and the controversy that comes from it. there's very little people like richard dawkins can do to reach out, as ultimately it depeds upon those who are willing to take the risk. i know for me there's too much at stake right now and it is the same for countless others.

Alom Shaha's speech was very good I think, and it's sad he had to defend his position over and over again in relation to the Guardian article. GING, I didn't realise you felt like that about his talk, I actully thought he was quite empowering. He also did acknowledge that it is easier for him as his parents are no longer around.

Out of interest, did Maryam come to the pub later? Funnily enough thats the thing I was really looking forward too about going, along with you guys/girls, supping a pint with her. Dunno why, it would have been weird but an experience all the same.

Also what do you think we can do about improving attendence next year. We really need more people to come to these events.

Yeah, him saying that ex-Muslims should be more vocal and not afraid to come out made a lot more sense when he told us about his mum being dead and the rest of his family being atheists. But I don't think he realiseses how difficult it is for some people from more religious families to be openly ex-Muslims. The strong bond we have with our Muslim families stop us from coming out because we love them and don't want to either hurt them or face rejection from them. He didn't have to deal with that side of things, and I think he underestimates how much of a barrier that is.
