Billy, Coltrane is my first love when it comes to jazz. I was never really all that bothered with it back a few years ago in my mid-teens but when I heard Q-Tip's
Let's Ride, sampling a cover of Trane's
Giant Steps by Joe Pass, I was solidly hooked on the composition. I obsessed over that one cycle for days then wanted to see how he evolved as an artist, going back to his earlier material and his work with Miles.
Speaking of Miles and Trane, the Kind of Blue sessions have got to be up there with the greatest moments in music history..

After you posted
Peaches En Regalia, I downloaded Hot Rats. I was surprised to find that it's from before 1969; it really does sound ahead of its time. My favourites are
Peaches,
Little Umbrellas and
It Must Be A Camel (the horns are so good there). Oh, and jazz violin? Love it.
His other great jazzy albums: The Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka
Cheers.
