  • Greatest person to ever live
     OP - December 13, 2010, 11:18 PM

Okay, so you get to choose the greatest person to ever live, but just one. Imagine that whoever you pick will have statues erected of them all over the world and will be taught to children and other students as a great historical figure and role model in classrooms all over the world.

    My pick:

So he's the guy you had in your avatar a while back. Cool.

I don't know who I'd pick. I don't really know much about history, especially political history so there are countless admirable figures which I don't know about.

I'll get back to you on this one.

If we're gonna stick a statue up in every classroom & streetcorner, I'd like to honour somebody who could have the greatest affect for out most pressing problem, over-population, in the future.

So I'm gonna give it to Carl Djerassi, father of the birth control pill.

    William Shakespeare.

Never quite understood Shakespeare, and always thought he was over rated.

^^Good one. I'll put down Benjamin Franklin but there are probably better ones which I can't think of right now.

    +1
I would vote for all of them.

Emmeline Pankhurst would also get my vote - for obvious reasons

I thought of perhaps Isaac Newton but though he acheived (in my opinion) the highest scientific achievement of all time, I do not know if his way of living is a model upon which one should mould oneself. Genius - yes; role model - I don't know.

As a role model, can't quite decide between Plato and Rumi. Perhaps even Walt Whitman, a man that encapsulated freedom of spirit and a life of joy. I suppose this also depends on the type of situation that one is thinking of - a Robin Hood type character is plenty inspiritional but I don't know if he's a role model for every situation of life.

bertrand russell, georg cantor, kurt godel, david hume and thomas aquinas/ibn rushd(plus einstein, euclid, riemann and newton for good measure). all for their contributions to how we think about logic, mathematics and how we use these two tools to model the world. i put aquinas and ibn rushd there for the simple reason that they both advocated an analogical approach to understanding the concept of god, and if all theists had this approach we wouldn't have terrorism and other shit done in the name of religion.

these are my favourites, but as for a single person who's statue i'd put everywhere? i can't name one, as saying that one's contribution to society is greater than another is something i am reluctant to do. science, philosophy, logic and mathematics are a big picture, all interconnected and every single piece of the puzzle is needed, no matter how 'big' or 'small' each piece is.
