  • Dropdown on sign-up
     OP - December 18, 2010, 10:59 AM

I was thinking whether it might be a good idea to have a relgious status dropdown on join-up for newbies.  This could also be amendable in the profile section later on.

It would say something like this:  Muslim, theist, non theist, exmuslim

There are still a number of users without any status currently, and would help alleviate this problem.

It would save admin time from updating these statuses, be done automatically as soon as members signup, and if newbies dont do an introductory post or do it after a while, other forum members can get to see where they are coming from.

e.g. if a muslim joins up, doesnt do an intro post, and posts here & there - then his posts might be put out of context by other readers, and get a different set of replies

cool idea. So that we know when a debate is multi-religion one!  Afro

Like when Liberty was here, and when Aramadick20 joins, it will be an all Abrahamic religion party!

I think it helps to identify a users perspective, particularly when we have different people floating around at different times - it sometimes hard to keep a track on things, particularly for other new joiners who dont know anybody yet

Yeah but I can see it becoming a nightmare.

"Oh, well theist or non-theist doesn't quite cover how I consider myself you know. Could you add an extra option for pantheist-existentialist-postmodernist-socialist-buddhist-goatfucker? Kthnx."

the options I gave should cover (as a minimum) all relevent positions from a forum perspective though - its automatic so should save admin time in the long run

Not really, because there are a lot of other classifications to take into account if you really want to give an indication of what to expect. Even the term "Muslim" means a stack of different things, depending on which flavour of Muslim you're talking about. Can be anything from raving Salafi to blissed out Sufi, and they'll have totally different opinions on key issues.

    ok

It's not an idea I'm 100% against. I'm just not enthusiastic about it. I can see the point in having an option for "ex-Muslim" but I'm not really keen on going further than that.

yep, I suppose that has similar benefits too & also easier to justify/more relevent given the title of the forum.

If its a compulsary dropdown, then it could just be a choice between ex-muslim & not applicable.

Its similar to what we have at the moment, with the added benefits of automation, less error/blanks & saved admin time, along with real-time updates.

Yup. It'd just be a check box I think. Tick if applicable.

I think that could be solved if you use a textbox instead of a dropdown

Well, when I signed up for trolling on um mah, I chose "believer of God" over "believer of humanity".

So I don't really think drop down will help.  But again, at-least give you an idea initially and fix the issue of so many people with "member" status..

By the way, you can change people's status to "Troll" from time to time.. grin12

I disagree. Debates should be debates of ideas, not of people (including people's positions, unless they choose so). It won't help anyone if assigning an automatic position would make people put words in one's mouth. It's never this simple anyway.

As an example, I might be tempted to throw ideas supporting a particular position, because I see certain arguments as valid enough to be worth adding to a discussion. It won't "mean" that I am always convinced 100% of that - or of everything that perspective comes with. I just see why it seems valid and add it to a discussion.

its not a bad idea, it has its own set of problems (a list of examples/suggestions might help), but overall solves more than it causes
