  • Jesus and "The Law"
     OP - December 23, 2010, 11:25 AM

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-20)

There is at least one good reason I can see why the above words attributed to Jesus do NOT eternally oblige Christians to impliment mosaic law in the way that the Koran DOES eternally oblige Muslims to impliment torah-style barbarities. This is the example of divorce.

Divorce is undoubtedly PERMITTED in JUDAISM for any number of reasons. Jesus PROHIBITED IT for any reason except adultery. This has an upside and a downside. The downside is that it deprives Christians of a theological justification for divorce except for adultery. The upside is that it provides a strong theological justification for Christians to regard the implementation of OT law in general, with all that entails, as non-binding upon them.(MORE ON THIS)
