  • Re-reading scripture.

I know this may well belong to Islame's thread on re-reading the Koran, but I wanted to pose the question without fear of "taking over" a thread.

When I was much younger (and still Christian), reading the bible tended to reinforce the intimidating parts of the religion (ie: threats of hell, etc.). But not long after becoming an agnostic with lingering fears, I re-read the bible. This time, without the "rose colored glasses" I was wearing before, the sheer absurdity of the thing actually drove most of the remaining fears away. It was so ridiculous I just could not take any of it seriously.

In a sense, when I gave it "one last chance", it did indeed change me. At 16, my brief time as an agnostic came to an end and I became an atheist.

Have any of you had a similar experience ? Did you re-read the Koran and think "Why did I ever fall for this stuff ?" And did this tend to re-enforce your "loss of faith" as it did for me ?

The thing that annoys the hell out of me is why my parents fell for this crap even after reading quran.

I do remember asking my parents the question many times about who created Allah. It took them a while to actually make me memorize the answer that he was always there by himself.
