Cannot kill a Muslim for the sake of a non believer

I am certain I once saw a verse in the Quran that effectively said the text in the subject, but I cannot find it now. Does anyone know where it is?

It's not in the Quran, it's in Sahih Al-Bukhari vol.1 p.20

1.111:
Narrated Ash-Shu`bi:
Abu Juhaifa said, "I asked `Ali, 'Have you got any book (which has been revealed to the Prophet apart from the Qur'an)?' `Ali replied, 'No, except Allah's Book or the power of understanding which has been bestowed (by Allah) upon a Muslim or what is (written) in this sheet of paper (with me).' Abu Juhaifa said, "I asked, 'What is (written) in this sheet of paper?' `Ali replied, it deals with The Diyya (compensation (blood money) paid by the killer to the relatives of the victim), the ransom for the releasing of the captives from the hands of the enemies, and the law that no Muslim should be killed in Qisas (equality in punishment) for the killing of (a disbeliever).

111 - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِىِّ عَنْ أَبِى جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَلِىٍّ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ كِتَابٌ قَالَ لاَ ، إِلاَّ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ ، أَوْ فَهْمٌ أُعْطِيَهُ رَجُلٌ مُسْلِمٌ ، أَوْ مَا فِى هَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةِ . قَالَ قُلْتُ فَمَا فِى هَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةِ قَالَ الْعَقْلُ ، وَفَكَاكُ الأَسِيرِ ، وَلاَ يُقْتَلُ مُسْلِمٌ بِكَافِرٍ .

I'm pretty sure there is something in the Quran, as I have not read those and yet I have a memory of reading it on my kindle.

Maybe you mean Q. 2:178 and its commentary?

O believers, prescribed for you is retaliation, touching the slain; freeman for freeman, slave for slave, female for female. But if aught is pardoned a man by his brother, let the pursuing be honourable, and let the payment be with kindliness. That is a lightening granted you by your Lord, and a mercy; and for him who commits aggression after that -- for him there awaits a painful chastisement.

Jalalayn:

The Sunna makes it clear that a male may be killed [in retaliation] for a female, and that religious affiliation should be taken into account also, so that a Muslim cannot be killed in return for a disbeliever, even if the former be a slave and the latter a free man.

The Tafsir is closer to what I remember reading, but I wasn't reading any Tafsirs at the time so I suspect there is something very similar in the Quran itself saying that you cannot kill a believer for the sake of a disbeliever.
