  • Why angels have wings?
     OP - January 01, 2011, 03:46 PM

Quote from: surah 35 verse 1
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. (35:1)

Now, why would angels need wings? Is it because just like birds, bees, and bats need wings?

I think when the Bible and the Quran was written, whoever wrote them, did not know any better? They did not know that Superman (Clark Kent) could fly in his two piece suit! So, is the imagination of man better than God's? This just show you that the whole thing was man made.

You should change your signature to match the song better "You can check out anytime you like, but you can't live and leave" Smiley

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

I always thought the song was like this:

Last thing I remember, I was
    Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
    'Relax,' said the night man,
    'We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
    But you can never leave!'

Anyways, never mind the siggy, what do you think about the wings?

They are clearly a sign that the whole concept of angels (and all other religious crap) is a product of human imagination.  But apologists will always respond with the argument that all religious concepts were made such that we (or rather people many centuries ago) could relate to and understand.  They will say, for example, that the concept of teleportation would not be understood if it was used instead.  So it is pointless trying to argue with them over these things.

ETA: Regarding the origin of the wings, I don't know the history of previous religions from which the abrahamic religions borrowed concepts.  But it is possible that this winged angels concept was also borrowed.

Wings appear ethereal, and humans were fascinated with soaring in the clouds like birds do Smiley. It's a sign of a lot of power, freedom, mobility. Especially in a time where transportation methods were limited and so was knowledge of science, and other more creative qualities that could potentially be given to a paranormal creature we're to think of as being superior in some ways.

Most O.T angels didn't even have wings and/or dont look human
Most of the ideas of angels that people imagine at present are down to recent centuries of painters coming up with ideas on their own.

Here are renditions based on what the OT actually says:-

    seraph

    thones angels

    cherub

    Throne's angels looks badass.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    Muy buenas; NEW MEMBER here,

religions & other spiritual beliefs  can use metaphors ( which means speaking/ explaining what U want to describe in picture- form ) etc to describe certain things:

" angels " with " wings" could mean that the mind/ soul etc flies: like a free bird. It can probably also mean mind/ soul of creatures in another dimension then our selves.

    Short introduction for You :

    - a) baptized in Sweden into christianity as a baby b) christian " confirmation" at 16 while still living at home with legal caretakers (  parents: mom christian dad: atheist c) officially announced myself as  a pragmatic AGNOSTIC as soon as I became of age at 18 years old
    - resident of Sweden
    - occupation: creatrice ( arts and culture)

    Agree with this part ^^

But not with this part ^^

I mean I don't think apologists have a case here. Or else, why all those stories about miracles, like parting the sea (Moses), walking on water (Jesus), flying on an effing flying donkey to the havens and back in one night (Mohamed). If we could grasp those, we could easily grasp Kent Clark style angels.

Do they have legalized holidays in China  ( as for example in Sweden); in other words beeing granted a minimum of weeks of holiday according to the law and if so:
    how long is it ?

How does it work in muslim countries:
r there any legal holidays issued by the state/ governement ? I guess Turkey etc is one thing and Saudi Arabia etc another.
