6) Our Origins
a) Intelligent Design?
Why would God he create us imperfect, with psychological and even physical flaws and imperfections.
Why are men created with nipples or even with a foreskin, and then its requested that we surgically remove it at birth?
The above is particularly poignant when it says:
Quran 95:4 Certainly We created man in the best make
Today’s medical advisory teams and councils do not recommend such surgical procedures as they are not necessary and there are potential risks involved. Incidentally circumcision is not mentioned in the Quran, only in the hadith – in fact the prophet himself was not even circumcised.
The Grand Imam of Cairo's al-Azhar University (the oldest and most prestigious academy of Islam) Sheikh Muhammad Tantawian is in the most influential and highest position of authority in Sunni Islam, said female circumcision is "a laudable practice that does honour to women." Thanks to edicts by scholars like him and justified by the Islamic hadith, we currently find 95% of girls are having their genitalia mutilated in Egypt.
If there is an intelligent designer, then why do life-impairing birth diseases exist? Can these diseases really be seen as part of intelligent design, or as scientifically-accepted random mutation?
Skin diseases - see Ichthyosis (limited life expectancy)
Intelligent design? See Charlotte Cleverley-Bisman disease (life is a few months usually)
Intelligent design? See Anencephaly disease (usually don’t survive birth)
b) ..Or Evolution?
We are perfectly designed for this earth, could this really have happened by naturally selecting random mutations?
We see examples of it every day with sophisticated feats of engineering like aeroplanes which all started from a basic design and gradually over the course of time adapted and revised to be better suited for its purpose. Ideas like the discovery of penicillin may have been random but there was a none random process selecting it, and that comes in the form of survival and reproduction over millions of years.
The below can be explained by evolution (by natural selection and mutation), but can it be explained by theism? If we are in fact a product of Adam and Eve, and not evolved from more earlier primates then why do we have;
an appendix?
poor eyesight?
men have nipples and mammary tissue?
the progressive skeletal evidence of evolutionary progression from ape to man?
a tailbone (coccyx)?
ear muscles (used by deer and pre-hominids to independently move for improved hearing & now become too small and only ‘useful’ for ear wiggling)
the genes for a tail which have become inactive, but in some rare cases gets activated - see pictures below?
What kind of intelligent designer gives humans and other animals a set of genes for Vitamin C production that don't actually work? (See Vitamin C Biosynthesis). Is this a relic of our primary herbivorous heritage or is there some theological explanation?
In fact the archaeological and skeletal evidence of our ape ancestry is now superseded by new DNA evidence. We are now able to read our entire DNA code. In the 1960s we discovered that the exact DNA sequences in endogenous retroviruses which are present in all our primate history. In more recent times we have managed to pinpoint the time and point on our DNA and see where identical chromosomes fused together to form modern man. Needless to say they match exactly.
It has reached the highest accolade in science to call it a Theory (NB: with a capitalised ‘t’ , and not to be confused with the different word ‘theory’) which puts it on the same level as the Theory of Gravity and Theory of Relativity. Natural evolution is a scientifically observed fact, and has been for some time now. It is startling example of where ancient theological theory is now directly in conflict with science.
So let me ask the question - why provide all this objectively verifiable scientific evidence against the Adam and Eve hypothesis? Were the Abrahamic faiths a means to understanding what was the unknown back then, or was God trying to dupe us?
