I'm very optimistic about the future - this is a new era - Egyptians don't want any authoritarian rule be it military or Islamic - they have crossed that line of fear - proven they can come out onto the streets in their millions - and the doomsayers can go fuck themselves.

What a great great day.  My hats goes off to the Egyptians for a well orchestrated & relatively 'peaceful' revolution.  Now they have shown how it can be done against all odds and against a blood thirsty tyrant, lets hope it continues and other parts of the Arab world gain some confidence from it.

If Egyptians can create a new constitution that separates mosque and state, that can be genuinely progressive, it will be truly momentous.

That should be Egyptians mission now - it will take years of hard work and consensus, but if they can produce a truly progressive constitution, the cultural and intellectual leader of the Arab people will become a moral beacon for the Islamic world, rejecting clericalism and the siren call of Islamic Nationalism and embracing secularism and modern egalitarian values. Its a dream worth dreaming.

    This is their demand:

حذف الديانة من البطاقة و جميع الأوراق الرسمية
توحيد القوانين و التشريعات لتسير على الجميع و ليحتكم كل واحد لدينه

Remove religion from the Identity Card and all official papers!

Amazing! I have been following this very closely the last two weeks and I was very surprised at the news today after the disappointing speech yesterday.
It's just so astounding how someone making a facebook page can end up dethroning a dictator!

I wish all the best for the Egyptian people and hope they can establish a democratic (and secular) government!
    Congratulations!  Smiley

    Congratulations!

This story from Ahram Online might help to explain how Mubarak came to make yesterday's speech and then step down today. The other good news is that torturer-in-chief Omar Suleiman seems to be out of the picture as well.

Bahrain is planning a day of big protests despite the government trying to bribe the citizens 1,000 Bahraini Dinars each. The Kuwaiti government did the same move (not for the first time in history, mind you) before the Bahraini government, and the people totally fell for it. There was also supposed to be a big protest on Feb. 8, but it was canceled after some "compromises" were reached. Those fools.
