The Census cuts non-religious people in half!

The census data on religion produced by the 2001 census gave a wholly misleading picture of the religiosity of the UK, cutting the number of non-religious people in half. See What is happening.

Why this matters

If you say you’re religious on the census and don’t really mean it, then you are treated by some sections of the media, churches, and even government policymakers as if you are a fully-fledged believer. See why bad census data matters.

What you can do

The short answer is simple. If you’re not religious, then answer “No Religion” on the census. Take the pledge today! You can find out why this is our recommendation and there’s lots of other ways you can support the campaign.

We need to raise awareness and we need to do it quickly. We are asking like-minded people to support advertising for the Census Campaign on public transport and in public places.

It's always infuriated me when people list themselves as christians, but can't answer a single yes to any question that would demonstrate them to being christians to absolutely any standard.

Edit: Done, Around 700 people should have seen the bulletin and link within the next few days.

Well it might have helped if there was a "Non-Religious" option on the damn census form instead of just asking which religion you are. Because of this I, too, answered Christian yet I'm not religious at all.

Does it say other on the form? If so check that and write non-religious or just skip that Q or cross all answers - spoiled ballot style.

Yes although I think the new forms due for completion in March DO include "No Religion" option now. I'll be sure to tick this one if they do.

If people can be assured that their input is kept confidential, then they'll opt to do so.

It would be kinda awkward if I tell my dad to put me down as atheist... mostly because he doesn't know I am one.

Is there no way of completing the census anonymously? How does one fill it in anyway? I've not done one before.

Woops, oh well. If you do decide to tell daddy that you are an atheist (not likely I assume) then you can send him a hallmark 'I'm an atheist, congratulations' card. On the minus side though hallmark is expensive.
