Saudi Arabia_ The King's Move ..35 billion dollars  to people., Good move

Before returning home to Saudi Arabia after medical treatments Wednesday, King Abdullah ordered a massive increase in the kingdom's development and state welfare payments — a move that some observers say was an attempt to stave off the popular unrest that is now sweeping the Arab world.

Even the merest hint of potential unrest in Saudi Arabia, which sits on a fifth of the world's oil reserves and is the third biggest source of oil for the United States, is enough to spark fear in the oil markets and cause nightmares in Washington.

Although there is little sign of any unrest in Saudi Arabia so far, there are growing political and economic frustrations.

After being caught by surprise by the popular revolts in the Middle East, few analysts will rule out the possibility of unrest in Saudi Arabia, but they do say it is unlikely.

NPR correspondent Deborah Amos is in Saudi Arabia and says the reason is simple: "The king is extremely popular, among young people and with reformers, too, unlike [former President Hosni] Mubarak in Egypt, and [former President Zine El Abidine] Ben Ali in Tunisia, who were deeply, deeply hated. They see [the king] as a reformer, and the changes he's introduced in the last two years have been startling."

Just out of curiousity, what makes the King popular? And what are his startling reforms that he has put in place over the last two years?

I think a mass protest like the others in the Arab countries, is highly unlikely in Saudi Arabia. With such holy sites, i.e Mekkah & Madinah; I just don't see a protest happening.

Saudi seems to be a very content country amongst the media as well.

I was under the impression that he had poured a lot if money into education, health, religious organizations, and infrastructure.  Debunker would know though.

Is be pissed where 35 billion dollars just magically appeared and why it wasn't available before, but I think the answer is obvious.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

The popular uprisings across the Middle East are sparking similar unrest in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with youth groups and workers in that country now calling for a “Day of Rage” demonstration in the capital, Riyadh, on March 11.

Already there have been protests last week in the city of Qatif and other towns in the country’s oil-rich Eastern Province demanding, among things, the release of political prisoners and a raft of social reforms. There are also reports of prominent Shia clerics being detained by the Saudi Sunni authorities, and security forces mobilizing in anticipation of further protests...

Saudi king offers $100 billion in benefits to head off unrest

Saudi King Abdullah on Friday announced unprecedented economic benefits worth nearly $100 billion and warned against any attempt to undermine the kingdom as upheaval swept the Arab world.

The monarch appeared to be responding to the whirlwind of regional unrest that has ousted autocratic regimes in Egypt and Tunisia, and thrown Bahrain, Yemen and Libya into bloody turmoil....
