I can't be bothered to double back and check if I posted this song before, but this is the band that made me cry in public at a gig, holding my friend,   Cheesy

Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

OMG how this band makes me cry.

You have really unusual taste for an American. You could easily pass as one of us...

Haha, it's just that there's SO much great music coming out of the UK.

You guys really win. I mean, I love my American bands (Animal Collective, Death Cab, The Decemberists, Elliot Smith....... old: Cash, Dylan) but... you guys have just as much talent if not more  Cheesy

A lot comes out of Europe in general. Bjork.... Mew, a Danish band who I absolutely love and a dear online friend (who lives states away from me but I got to meet in person, yay!) told me about them I pretty much owe it to him.

I had heard about Laura before vaguely from someone but never got around to listening to her... until Mumford & Sons and then I discovered everyone else from there, since they're all associated together and stuff. Yay London.

Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

Not if it's what they called you in the school playground.  Tongue

Its a nice name  Smiley although could get some teasing one day, for some reason i thought you meant Noah until I finished the sentence.

I did name him Noah. I was trying to be funny when I said 'Whale' (I really shouldn't try, I know).

But it was very cute of you to try to make me feel good about naming my son Whale.

I know this song is ancient. For most of you, anyway.

But it gets me every-time, when I am lonely.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I remain.

hey, I wouldn't judge  Cheesy.  I wanted to name my son Afif.  Trust me, it took some major months of persuading to not name him that, had I had my way, I wouldn't have cared about the teasing because one day I hope he would own his name and not care about what the world thinks.

Go against the grain, you get a nicer finish.   Wink

Wow, that makes me chuffed to hear that coming from an American...not sure why I'm chuffed, cause I obviously don't make the music myself. But I live for it, so I'm really happy to hear of some solidarity coming from your side of the pond.

Americans are still cool also: I love The Black Keys, The Hold Steady, anything Jack White touches, Kings of Leon, The Strokes, MGMT....Canadians are even cooler, but I won't upset you by going into that...

Berbs: I like your advice there.

But I think Whale is too much against the grain. Going against the grain that much is not fair on the individual who has to actually swim against the tide for the rest of his life.

I'm glad you didn't go with Afif btw.

I'm not, it was such a cool name, even  the joke parts of it.

You know, you can't even make fun of my name?  it has nothing fun about it.  Afif was a fun name.   parrot

while its a religious song, it does remind me of the loss of my
dad and Rollin.  It still makes me cry.

Broken Cup - Jason Webley. YT doesn't have a video of that song, so I'll post the lyrics.

Well the swing set is rusted,
    The picture frame's cracked,
The photos have all faded to gray.
    The faces you trusted,
    Just never came back,
    Yes childhood has eroded away.
And the songs that your mother sang,
As she rocked you to sleep,
You howl out of tune when you're drunk.
Wear good shoes on these streets,
Or you'll soon cut your feet,
On a piece of the broken cup.

After so many Johns and Janes,
    Have stained your sheets,
Is it habit or thirst brings them back?
    After so many pipers,
    Have played on these streets,
Who is missed more, the children or the rats?
Yes we've traded our toy choo-choo trains,
    And rosary beads,
For a bottle of gin and a fuck.
Now we sit 'round the bar,
Proud of how bored we are,
As we drink from our broken cup.

    We sing, "Everything, everything, everything,
    Is now permitted.
    All the oaths we've taken,
    Have been graciously forgotten,
    And every sin, every sin,
    Is now forgiven."
And every sip somehow tastes rotten.

So let's drink to the men,
    Who forgot what they lost.
They've got the best shoes that money can buy.
And a toast to our impotence,
    Our cowardice, our sloth,
Nothing matters, why bother to try?
    And three cheers for Mary,
    Our virgin, our whore.
If she favors you, it's just dumb luck.
Now I'll lift up my glass,
To a life on our ass.
    Brothers, lift your cup high,
    While you're waiting to die,
May we all find a trace,
    A faint echo of grace,
Through the crack in our broken cup.
