     OP - April 09, 2011, 08:11 AM

I was thinking about being covert about this but I assume you are all decent people so I have no need to hide my intentions. I am a Muslim curious about ex-muslims simply because I want a different perspective than the one that I'm familiar with.

I've known few ex-muslims in my life and of the few there's only one whom I really conversed throughly with regarding religion and I really didn't respect his opinion much because he used extremely shallow and base arguments to defend his points; suffice to say I wasn't really interested in hearing Bill Maher's opinion re-hashed constantly, I've already watched religulous and am familiar with the comedic genius of George Carlin (funny because its true) and there wasn't much else he had to support his arguments. Although in his defence we were only 17 so I didn't expect much. It's funny, I remember this Muslim girl who made a diligent but futile effort to actually proselytize him and it always brought a smile to my face watching her hand him a brochure very excitedly but he would always refuse it (this happened numerous times). I don't blame him, they were the typical brochures published by neighborhood Masjids that didn't really address issues of importance to ex-Muslims.

I digress. Where was I going with this? Right! My point in all this was that I'm just here to get a different take on many of the tenets and beliefs of Islam.

Anyways this post may seem somewhat like an incoherent and awkward introduction but keep in mind its 4:11am in, ahem, Botswana, so that's what you can attribute that to.

Aslam o alikum brother, welcome here,im also muslim from germany.overall this site is ok,people like to debate, but i think the 'ex muslim' here believe in many rididuclous things, for example if you ask them how did universe start, can you even make a cell without god, they have no answer but they try to change the topic by useless jokes like 'flying spaghati monster'.anyway i recommend its not good for you to talk on this site unless u have strng faith, because is very easy to become tempted and listan to the shaitan and start questioning,i can handle because my faith is strong and i have very good imams here, but i would think its not good idea for all muslim to come here,if you have any questions its better if you pm me and i will try to help you

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome.

And to answer your question, yes I'm familiar with Ahmed Deedat and his protegé Dr. Zakir Naik. Although I do enjoy listening to both of them; sometimes they deduce syllogisms that leave people stumped, I believe that sometimes we need to take their words with a grain of salt because their contentions can be countered. In general however, I don't support evangelical endeavors. I haven't read any of his books but I'll look into it. Currently I'm reading "In Search of Enemies" by John Stockwell but as soon as I finish I'll look into one of his books.

yes,i agree also, thats why god sent prophets to teach morality, and then people just taught to their children, otherwise if someone grows up in a jungle,he is like a wolf,he doesnt have morality, thats why there are holy books to teach it

Hi streetray, you sound like a decent guy.

Saeed, you can PM him also, in case he is able to give you a more-experienced perspective on things? I have a feeling you could learn one our two things from him.

Streetray - we have another good, but occasional, muslim contributer on here called lightray...not a relation of yours is he?

Haha ofc I do, what I meant was morals in society today and social constructs are learned. My stance on Fitrah would be limited to Tawhid I suppose

I'm a born Muslim. Although my understanding of Islam has some variance with what my parents believe. My family is from the Indian Sub-continent so naturally we follow the Hanafi madhab and more or less subscribe to a form of Islam that is analogous to deobandis. Although I consider myself a traditional Muslim there are some discrepancies between my beliefs and the older generation. For example, my maternal grandfather, who is from Hyderabad, sees nothing wrong with gambling (the lottery specifically) and palm-reading and considers both to be acceptable practices in Islam, accordingly, my grandma also discouraged my mom from wearing the hijab when she chose to do so. LOL
