  • So I met this girl, right?
     OP - June 17, 2011, 07:08 AM

On some website, and she turned out to be muslim. Shocker. Naturally we discussed my apostasy and she wanted to know why I believe Islam is false. A naive part of me thought I would get the chance to express my views and she would listen and come to reason, instead of her just raising the drawbridge, filling the moat and aiming the arrows.

I apologise if this thread is a duplicate of another similar topic but this concerns a personal issue and unlike a lot of you, this was my first encounter with a muslim whilst openly admitting my apostasy, so it came kind of a reality shock at the level of zeal and indoctrination some muslims possess even in the face of logic and reason; not to mention that I joined this website to connect with other apostates and not feel so isolated and wrong. I would like to have this expressed.

I got the special offer, full package deal. "You're a shaitain/possessed/tricked/corrupted/mislead, you didn't have faith, how was the world created?"(A personal favourite of mine) And plenty more that you all know and love; though I'm not too sure if you know about this gem, "you studied on the internet, which is a bad place and wrong, you should have studied tafsir and read the Qur'an". Please tell me this is retarded, I'm not crazy right? This IS retarded right?

I pitied her, as I saw myself, mirrored and trapped. The fact that I had been where she had but she has not gotten to where I am, was lost on her. I did want to help her because I wanted to help myself but . . . I suppose it is impossible.

So I want to ask some questions in regards to how you deal and interact with muslims in similar situations, including but not limited to:

    • What kind of things do you like to say?
    • Do you say anything at all?
    • Have you had any success?
    • Do you feel there's any point to talking to them?
    • How do you feel after one of these . . . interactions? (I felt not so good, personally)
    • What kind of reactions do you get?
    (And most importantly)
    • Do you have any advice?

Right well, yeah, thanks or something.

My tips for this kind of person are
1: Don't make positive affirmations like "The Quran says the Earth is flat"
2: Take the approach that you "just don't quite understand it"
3: Pose something you don't understand and then let them do most of the talking.

If you do most of the talking they won't listen or think about the issue. If instead you pose something you don't understand then they think about it in order to answer. Then when they answer say "Yes, I thought that too, but I don't get how that can be right because......."

Or you could just say "Actually I am trading an eternity in fire because I like bacon sandwiches" Smiley

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

That's actually some great advice, I'll heed it, as expected of your repertoire. Thanks a lot.

Do you simply want to deconvert her, or do you just want to have a close relationship with her?

I'm married to a Christian and we seldom discuss religion. We get along very well.

Put her on the back foot.

Prosletysers / evangelists of both Islam and Christianity aggressively try to put YOU on the back foot.

That is their main stance and mode.

    Reverse that.

Yes, the part of me that hates islam wants to de-convert every muslim. Having said that, I don't have any 'goals' or expectations.

I just felt like sharing this experience with people who could understand I suppose and getting a better idea of 'what to do' next time.

What's she doing on an apostate-friendly website? Kerb-crawling or merely driving home by an unusual route?

I think somewhere along the line, you became a little confused. I met her on another website, Chatango, to be precise.

What I said there is for something completely different and I can't edit it out now, thanks . . .

When I first got discussing my beliefs with an atheist back in my Muslim days, the atheist told me: "It's not important you try to make me believe what you believe, it's important you understand why I believe what I believe, and I will make effort to understand why you believe what you believe." He told me to be open minded about the truth. This gave him good grounds state religion as he saw it, he went to on explain the political advantages of manipulating people via religion in the old days and was making me see through his perspective what religion was. As he was giving rational explanations for rules in the bible that did not involve god his explanations were in such a way that I could only say, "Yes it's a reasonable conclusion." Mind you he was talking about Christianity so I was probably more open to accepting criticism of that faith. Also I think this approach works better if you guys are friends as you'd respect each others words better and listen.

In short try to engage in a conversation about why you personally don't accept faith, before criticizing the person of why they should not accept faith. At each step of your explanation make sure that the person agrees that what you are saying is reasonable and could be true.

Yeah what TR and zooby said. Aggressive approach hardly works with religious people. And hope that she is not deluded enough to not think about it.
