My mind frame/personality seems to have a significant shift approximately every 2 years since I was 16.
Which currently makes me question my current confused mind frame which has been a year and a bit, wondering if I have to see this confusedness out for 2 years before a change occurs!

    Blah!

I know it was toward you quod. I just rejoice in pain and suffering. I drive down the street and laugh at poor people from my Porsche. after that I eat a burrito and throw it away in front of a starving child. I show homeless people my house just to tell them "that I get somewhere warm to live". I see orphans and I show them a picture of my picture of my parents and tell them "my parents love me". All just atheist activities

I recently told a friend of mine that I don't want kids. Her response? "You're young. You'll change your mind when you have kids."

I think the whole point of deciding not to have kids is that I won't have kids. And what if I did have them and realized that, yeah, really don't want the responsibility? Do said kids have to suffer because I have to struggle to feign interest in their lives?

Ignore them, it's just because you are female that it's expected you will naturally want to have to kids, but it's perfectly ok to not want them either.  Believe me, as someone who has 3 of them, and never really felt maternal instincts pre-children, it's not something you want to go through unless you truly truly love kids.

Lol I mean I love my kids, but there is no denying that I wish I had followed my gut which never wanted to have them, instead of just doing what was required of my gender.

It's hard work.  Infuriatingly hard work.

Also you are in the right place, there are other women and men on here who have actively chosen not to have children and will understand your decision.

Yes Quod mate, but we all find meaning and purpose in each other. And in living for someone we find a reason to live.

I understand it can be a daunting and infuriating experience at times, but children much like lovers make life worth living as it illuminates aspects of living that you wouldn't experience otherwise. It's a mazing what sense of purpose and clarity having to take care of and rear a child can give you. It's a huge responsibility, but one filled with equal parts joy and tears.

I don't know. I have two younger siblings who were born when I was in my teens and I still find them a pain in the ass. My mom left them to me to "raise" them (even asked me to discipline them since they don't listen to her). And, sure, they were cute as babies, but now that they're older, I find that they annoy me. And I know, they're not "my" kids and maybe I would feel differently if they were. But to be honest, when I worked at the daycare, I was exposed to the many not-so-fun parts of having kids and it just turned me off to the whole idea. I saw kids who were disrespectful to their parents short of cussing them out (and these were like, eight year olds). Most of the people who brought their kids were single moms in their twenties (it was a Muslim daycare). One woman's husband left her with their seven kids when she objected to him bringing in another wife to the family. Another woman was barely a year older than me and already had an infant to take care of on her own because her husband left her.

So, yeah, not pretty.  Tongue I think I'll just skip all the drama and get a dog instead.  Afro

Jedi, it's not that I'm against the idea, it's that if I do ever have them it's a responsibility like no other, and I'm honestly enjoying my life right now. It's not a question of not wanting them, or not liking them, it's a question of do I want them any time soon? No, I do not. But that6's now, in the future who knows? Smiley

Then have them in your own time. I don't think I was imposing anything on anyone.

But that's no denying that for some people having a child does give you a sense of purpose as I've seen many of my friends transformed after their children are born (some in a negative way but most in a positive way).

We evolved to take care for our young, to spread our seed and ensure its propogation. In a social environment most no doubt find purpose in others. You may find greater clarity and purpose in having children and discover things you didn't know about yourself.

And Os, good for you. Well done.

What Berbs said was interesting, you're female thus meant to breed. Has anyone ever noticed that with men, if you choose not to have children it's not that big of a deal, but if you can't have them you're looked at with pity even if you don't want them? My youngest sister's dad, through decades not taking care of himself (I won't go into specifics) was told that he'd ruined his sperm and could never have children. His father responded to this by saying "You're not a man anymore" or something along those lines.

It's a weird thing. Don't have children by choice, fine and dandy. Spunk doesn't work, you're a lepper.

    ^^^^^^^

You know Quod that's so true. I think that certain cultures associate the ability to have children with social contrived gender roles and status more than others. A man who has lots of children thus showing he is virile and a REAL man (though he must have a moustache to qualify) is highly regarded in most south asian communities including the diaspora. The issue of impotency, being 'na-mard', is something that brings great shame on a person and is the foundation for many unhappy marriages, family feuds and divorces.

If a woman is unable get pregnant...she is a curse, a 'badwah' on the family. Damaged goods as it were. Notice how in Islam sex is mostly associated with procreation, how only the mother is praised and honoured and that the woman is seen only in the context of providing for her husband/children. No doubt the inability to have children is in some cultures enough to designate someone as an outcast, it's perceived religiously inspired sanction makes the situation even worse.

Biologically we are at the very least meant to breed, spread our genes. However, biology is not destiny. Some people adopt children, foster children, care for others that are not biologically their own because there is an 'instinct' within us (mostly psychological) that wants to invest in others (or have most of us been socialised that way).

I would love to have children one day, Insh'allah. But not because I want them to be inheritors of my (pithy) fortune or to carry on the family name and tradition. But because I genuinely love children and get great enjoyment from seeing them play and discover the world around them in the most innocent, curious of fashions that puts me to shame when I reflect upon the preoccupations of my own when it comes to world affairs, religion and making money.

    Anyway....
