  • Chat issues + poll
     OP - June 24, 2011, 12:17 AM

    Quick summary--

We got this Muslim dude on chat, talib (not on the forum), who, for the most part, seems harmless enough (and nice enough until recently), but he uses a BNC to access chat unlike everyone else, so it appears he's been idling for weeks on end, and he does not participate in chat very much at all. For the last several weeks several people noted that this made them uncomfortable and unwilling to share pics or other personal stuff on main chat that they otherwise would. And he NEVER LEAVES (or at least it appears that way to users).

So today I brought up these concerns again, and asked him politely several times if he would just drop the BNC and access chat like everyone else does and leave when he's done chatting. He admitted he'd heard these concerns for weeks, but flatly refused, several times, to access chat like everyone else and sign on and off. At which point I stopped being polite, called him a selfish prick, cause that's what he is, then left chat and left Prince to continue arguing that talib should be forced to abandon using the BNC and sign on and off due to the same concerns that others have raised and I mentioned above.

I do not think this matter is settled, and I'd like to settle it here. Furthermore, it's apparent that two ops aren't enough on chat, and a third would be good for when the others aren't around. I suggest Kod as he's frequently on chat and a level-headed guy.

I would greatly appreciate input from serrated_colon, thinkfree, as well as other regular or semi-regular chat users here. Thanks.

Edited to add: I didn't know what a BNC was before today, so for anyone else wondering-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BNC_%28software%29

Yes, I think he should access chat like everyong else.  I'm not really comfortable with the idling, or appearing to, nor do I understand just why he won't be considerate and say yes to the request.

How does it hurt him to log out properly if he knows it was ease peoples concerns more?

That makes me feel iffy even more than the idling.

He says it would log him out of all the other chat rooms he's in too because of his UNIX thing. Roll Eyes

Also +1 on kod the mod, the other two ops idle too much to deal with trolls half the time.

I was gonna say + 1 on Kod, but yeah plus 2, he is there often and usually knows what is going on.  So yeah, power him up people.   Afro

Right and that may be true, but the solution is simple-- don't use the BNC for this room, access it like the rest of us do-- and he knows this. Why he's unwilling to comply after being politely asked several times by different people, and after he knows it makes a lot of people uncomfortable, is beyond me.

And after what feels like 10 hours calling bullshit on his claim that there is no way he can access and leave the chan like everyone else without losing the other rooms, he's finally said he's gonna access it from another connection. Roll Eyes

    KOD for OP.  Afro

Talib needs to stop fucking trolling and it's about time he's shown the door.

I think he is harmless.  I have chatted with him briefly whereby I (politely) challenged him about this very issue.  I believe he is an Irish convert to Islam who is still learning about Islam, but he (says he) has no problem with apostates.  Having said that, I think he should not stay logged-in for days on end.  That's creepy (especially for a Muslim in an ex-Muslim chatroom frequented by young apostates who often want to remain anonymous).  Ex-Muslim chatrooms (and forums) are different from most chatrooms (and forums).

The point isn't that he's sinister - he is weirding people out on just about the only place on the internet they can speak and feel free, for no good reason whatsoever. The solution is so simple, but apparently that was 'too annoying'. In any case, he's agreed now - if he follows up then I have no more complaints.

What a douche. So has he fuckin done it yet? Lemme know when he does and I'll come back, but I still think that even if he doesn't use a BNC a limit needs to be put on his idle time. Having a Muslim who doesn't chat much just hanging out for weeks on end in an ex-Muslim chatroom is a bit like having a office manager people hardly see hanging out at a union hall for days on end. Talib may very well not have any sinister motives and besides his pigheadedness may be a decent guy, but it's not unreasonable for people to have concerns about it.

All the regular and semi-regular users should boycott chat until he is brought into line.

Fuck him then. I wasn't asking for him to be banned, but I am now.

well i've sorted it out essentially. he'll part the channel from time to time, while remaining connected to the mibbit irc server via irssi.

now jesus fuck let me study :/

irssi is a text-mode IRC client, as used by old-school IRC users who might want something a bit more regularly maintained than, say, BitchX.

He'll remain connected to the server that the room's hosted in (irc.mibbit.net), but he'll leave the room at intervals.

In non-nerd speak, this basically means he has agreed to log out of our chatroom when he's finished chatting with us -- which is basically what we want.

For what it's worth - I think he's just an Unix-type geek that lurks everywhere. It's an older school of IRC user, and being creeped out might just be an overreaction. He's not done anything particularly offensive that I can see, and I've even had the odd conversation with him.

He seems pretty harmless to me.

He no longer uses a BNC, and he's now signing out when he's not in there, so I think the poll no longer applies. Of course, if he ends up lurking more than anyone else again, I might think differently..
