I'm kinda tired of being the only one i can see who is not fasting. So this year, partial food fast,No smoking, Just water and possibly a bit of fruit or something to maintain my energy. I just got back to Saudi. I want to make the best of this month since its usually a downer, without getting into any discussion about it. So , Ramadan officially starts today, a day late.

Some of my friends on FB posted Ramadhan bs, so I had to be reminded of it all. I will remain suspiciously quiet on the subject. Would not know it's happening otherwise.  Now, where's the salo... piggy

Awww...you miss the belonging, the spirituality of it all, and the unique feelings that only a month of pious, voluntary starvation can invoke. That's perfectly understandable.

I missed that long before I was an ex muslim.  Being married into the wrong family can quickly destroy all the feelings a child once associated with ramadan.

In my parents house ramadan was a time of celebration, of belonging, coming together after a hard day fasting and eating special ramadan food that only ever got cooked in ramadan.  Those are some of my sweeter memories of childhood.  My first full fast was at the age of 7 in the height of summer, but I didn't mind, because it was a good time.

Ramadan in my husbands family house?  Cheesy  nothing like that.

Its as if they have forgotten that shouting and beating people breaks your fast as surely as eating food does.

Anyway, whatever power ramadan once had to make me feel a part of something, that has genuinely gone.

Fuck ramadan, and the Buraq it rode in on.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I remember those long summers also (the last time fasting was as hard as it is now). I was a kid then and I would beg and plead with my parents to let me fast. How things have changed…But I do remember that I felt so alive and grown-up whenever I was allowed to fast. Me and my friends actually used to go to the park and play hours and hours of football, in order to pass the time... Looking back now, how the fuck did we do that??? We’d play intense, competitive football for like 6 hours, whilst fasting? I can barely sit-up nowadays when I fast. Were we fucking superhuman Huh?

Berbs, the more I read about you…well, I won’t go into it… I just wish God would smile down at you, and give you a break for once. It’s so unfair that some of us have hogged all of the good luck that is on offer, and others seem to have missed out completely.

Lol I know what you mean, I was sporty but I was tall so I won certain things by default mostly, but I remember all of our sports days were held during ramadan and that time, and we muslims couldn't even drink water and back then schools weren't as tolerant of different religions, so you had to do it.

Yet still we managed, and as you said, still being allowed to fast was a beautiful, grown up thing.

My brother said the same thing about football the other day, said him and his friends just used to kick a bal around waiting for the end of the day. lol he is only 20 and already lacking that football fast energy and stamina he once had.

Thanks Musivore.  No use in wishing god would smile on me though, it was god's smiles that brought me all this bullshit in the first place.

Anyway, I feel luck is headed my way now.  Since I intend to rob a leprechaun's factory.

hmmm, when I grew up we did observe Ramadan, and my mom cooked lovely food, but really I still remember it was very hard to fast all day, I don't remember every enjoying the fast, and the food was good, but my mum's food was always good anyway, so it made no difference that it was Ramadan apart from the fact we had desert every day during Ramadan.

I much preferred Eid... I looked forward for my Eid present and extra money Smiley

So like my mum woke me up for suhoor this morning, well not exactly woke me up seeing as I wasn't asleep at 3am anyway, so I agreed to go down and help her with the serving and that. But she seemed to have thought I was fasting, so this morning when we got back from the airport (Sister is back from Dubai) and as she wasn't fasting, my mum made breakfast for her and I asked for some too, but instead I got shots of shocking and surprised looks from the family (those who don't know I'm an exxie) so that was an awkward situation as they kinda expected me to be fasting, but luckily I retorted that I am medicated so can't fast.

Damn it, I hated the look my mum gave me though when I asked her to make me toast. finmad .. Fucking hell, it's not like I said to her I was fasting and tbh even if I was, I have no obligations to fulfill that fast. whistling2

Zaiba,  Don’t you think it’s a bit inconsiderate of you to ask a fasting person to go and prepare you food? Its not like you are a young child, if you wanted toast, just go and get your own  you lazy bum!!  Roll Eyes

Well, considering her mum was already making breakfast for someone else at the time, I don't think toast is too much to ask for.

Yeah exactly, I'm not inconsiderate because I don't eat or drink in front of them, and when they broke their fast I even served them tea and whatever they asked for. Plus as Sunbul said, my mum was already making breakfast for my sister and gran who got back from Dubai this morning. Roll Eyes

    Inconsiderate my arse. da finga

Zaiba, you should have offered to prepare your sister's food instead of your mum.  Trust me its inconsiderate, I used to be the only one fasting at home as my late hubby was an atheist, and they whole family constantly expected me to cook their food when am fasting, it really is not very nice... it would have made such a huge difference if for a change they offered to make my iftar for a change Smiley

Trust me your mum would so love it if you made an offer to take on a lot of the food prep while she is fasting... I know some mums like to control the process of food prep, but actually offering and doing stuff makes a huge difference... besides she wont be giving you those nasty looks, but loving and appreciative ones

Did you even read my post? wacko I got out of my bed at 3am to serve suhoor to my muslim family, if that isn't considerate then I don't know what is. And fyi I do most of the cooking at home anyway, my mum already has a lot to do seeing as she's a teacher as well as a Uni student and I do all the housework and cooking for her.

So please don't be telling me I ain't considerate. Cause that's the last thing I wanna hear.

I still think its not nice to ask your mum to get you breakfast while she is fasting, at suhur no one is fasting, so it doesn't count   aloofandbored0

Ramadan was never fun for me. I don't even remember the first time i withheld from food. I mainly remember the stress about have i broken my fast ? i remember one phase where i would spit saliva at the corner of my school desk because i thought that if i swallowed it i would break my fast.
until i ran into a fellow student drinking of a juice box and i asked her, you're not fasting? she said. No i don't fast. We were in fourth grade. big wow moment for me then. Or that one time i ate a grape without thinking about it and thought Shit!! how useless was that?

I haven't been fasting for well over 10 years and i don't intend to. But since i am living where the majority do. I might wanna take the opportunity to refrain from smoking. During working hours at least.  It hasn't been so bad. My 8 hour flight yesterday was a sort of preparation if you will.

LOL mufa9a,  well my late hubby was English, he converted to Islam to marry  me and at the time I really was convinced he really loved and embraced Islam, but after a couple of years of our marriage, he admitted it was all a show and he really didn’t believe in Islam or any other religion …

Anyway, with the saliva thing, I was like you , for years I thought if I swallow saliva I will break my fast... but didn't spit in my desk lol

wow today I found out that one of my close colleagues is a convert too! He is a guy so doesnt wear anything special, no beard or anything, but he was fasting and I had my suspicions and yes... when I asked him, he told me he is a muslim! I had a bit of a hard time not to interview him and start discussing but I wanted to follow the spirit of peace and love inspired by the ramadan so I shut my mouth... I so much wonder if any of the other converts never have the same issues as I used to have, whether they never come across the controversial issues or just sweep them under the rug..? But of course you will never get an honest answer cause you're not considered to let down your faith.

Fara7, if I may ask, how were you doing at the time with your atheist husband? Were you serious in your faith back then and did it pose a problem to you that he was atheist? I am asking cause my ex-husband (islamically at least) immediately considered our marriage ended when he found out I was not a muslim anymore, well he waited some time hoping I would come back to my senses.

Musivore, thanks for the welcome ;-) I am glad and I should spend more time here I guess because you seem to be the only ones understanding how, when you have left a religion, it still can be a part of your life and psychology so much, I would love to get islam completely out of my system but I don't seem to be able... (yet?)

Petals, my religious strength and practice gone through ups and downs, but I never considered leaving my husband just because he was an atheist, as far as I was concerned I thought it would anger Allah more if I left my husband (I can be illogical like that lol), in the last few years when he was very ill, my religiousness became stronger and stronger, I wanted to pray for him more than anything else really, prayed Allah will guide him and heal him. After his death, I kept fasting and praying for him, I even wanted to do haj on his behalf, I kept asking Allah to forgive his disbelieve and show him mercy, yes I know Muslims are not allowed to pray for dead atheists, but at the time I just knew in my heart that Allah is bigger than that, and I know that the hadith ordering us not to pray for dead non believers must’ve been a silly hadith or a mistake or something. I felt so awful to even consider that he is going through the grave torture/purgatory.

Anyway, I am waffling again, but the answer is his belief  or lack of it didn’t make much difference to me,  we didn’t have the most perfect marriage, but we were very good partners, and I wasn’t willing to give up such a good partnership.
Are you regretting telling your husband about your apostasy? I know my late hubby tried to hide it from me for a while, but at the end he just admitted it, suppose if you are so close to someone, you can’t help talking about it.

I fasted on day 1 but didnt on day 2

I actually didnt fidn it that hard - I was awake from 9am to 9pm and at work for 8 hours.

I gotta say say when you dont believe it in it is hard to keep motivation.

Main thing is I feel a bit guilty when sitting near family at iftar time.

Definitley feels a nicer time during ramadan in a sense as the family does come closer together - seems am I one of the few that doesnt come from a totally screwed family!
